Kathayoon, you are telling my story in so many ways. I have my job, but so much else is me. Thank you for sharing.

Personally, I've found that finding 'purpose' in other ways has helped with mental health. Has anybody had any luck approaching this from the flip side, viewing it as a time to 'learn' career-wise through online career or technical courses? Kind of like aligning people with the bigger goals in the long term.

Can you speak to the line between empathy and not talking too much about yourself and leaving space for them to talk. I struggle with letting people know in what ways I can understand them and not co-opting the conversation. This is about them not me.

Platitudes are used when you don't know what to say. Sometimes, its ok to say that you don't know what to say...

I would say that this depends on the temperament and relationship you have with that employee. You also have to be comfortable with silence because people need space to process and then talk.

“To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.” Eleanor Roosevelt. But sometimes we also need to listen to our own heart. We need to start being human with each other and ourselves. Not just an "employee" but a person. Don't be afraid of what you don't know, trust what you feel when with someone.

I encourage a lot of my mentees/students to write 1-3 “outcomes” for their career - big picture but specific things they want to accomplish. not jobs they want to get, necessarily, but areas they want to influence or changes they want to affect. it comes in handy a lot in times of transition!
