@isabel, have you heard of spartan races? Basically a challenging obstacle course. I know a teen who does these a few times a year.
Janine Lyman
05:19:53
@kim, how did you "market" yourself as a homeschooler when you were applying for your internships?
Kim C-G
05:26:31
I was going to a lot of public events as a gigging musician, event photographer, and had mentors at north star who connected me with people who were interested in interns! I never technically applied for anything, it was mostly just word of mouth 🙂
Janine Lyman
05:27:20
That's awesome! I heard you saying a lot of that... connecting with people. That's incredibly valuable
Kim C-G
05:28:20
@janine 🙏🏽
Janine Lyman
05:33:14
@Kim, @Tove, and @Isabel, do you think that the nature of being outside of the traditional school system contributed to you being more open about taking risks or chances on your curiosities ... instead of making decisions based on what was "safe" and “sure”?
Samantha Kifer
05:33:42
That's a great question Janine
Janine Lyman
05:35:33
🤓
Kim C-G
05:35:57
Yes! For sure
Janine Lyman
05:37:07
It seems like it would give a person the sense that the possibilities are so much more possible
Samantha Kifer
05:37:34
Right, you're developing confident autonomy in having to self-direct all the time
Janine Lyman
05:37:49
💜
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
05:40:00
This is a very impressive panel of young people!
Janine Lyman
05:41:07
Agree Amanda, @Iris, or any of the others... I would love it if you would be able to share a time that while you were learning something of your own interest led to learning something from the traditional curriculum?
Janine Lyman
05:43:27
That's soooooo incredible @isabel!!!
Samantha Kifer
05:43:29
OMG that is SUCH a great point Isabel, like you got a head start on understanding yourself and what's important to you
Sabrina (HoustonEd.org)
05:44:12
I'm curious how the young people navigate technology…mostly interested in passive and social media related.
Janine Lyman
05:44:26
you ‘heathens” 😂
Samantha Kifer
05:44:38
lol
Samantha Kifer
05:46:00
Did you ever go through a period where you were not happy about your internet/social media use (ex: just blindly scrolling through), and had to dial that back and refocus? Or have you always felt a balanced good relationship with these things?
Isabella Pizzitola (she/her)
05:46:17
I am Iris’ mom. My 17 year old reads and studies Shakespeare and the Romantics for fun. The kids choose to take science classes.
Sabrina (HoustonEd.org)
05:47:34
At HGEC, Iris participates in creative writing, poetry, debate…pretty much everything we offer...she's there!
Janine Lyman
05:48:41
@Isabella, this is so incredibly heartwarming and encouraging that there is true anecdotal evidence that this is ABSOLUTELY the way that people should learn 🙂
Janine Lyman
05:50:13
I wonder if the social media usage when you're in school is a bit of an escape???
Samantha Kifer
05:50:33
SO INTERESTING, how there's a difference in social media use in vs outside of being in school
Sylvie
05:50:59
@Janine, my kids have always followed self-directed education and they all definitely come across some of the things that are covered by traditional curriculum: whichever portion of it is relevant to their own lives and their community will catch their attention. The thing is they can go much deeper into exploring these topics because they have the time and freedom to do so.
Janine Lyman
05:52:18
@Sylvie, that's exactly what I suspected!! When that particular content is consumed at the EXACT moment it means something or is related to the other interests then you dig deeper.
Janine Lyman
05:52:20
Love this!
Kelley Birch
05:52:38
The thought occurs to me that the point of "school” from K-12 is to prepare to become an independent, functioning adult and have a life! Love each of these stories!

💪🏼
Janine Lyman
05:54:31
Exactly @kelley!!
Alison Snieckus, Liberated Learners
05:54:43
for kids who don't go to school they get to BE independent and have a functioning life, they don't have to prepare for it.
Janine Lyman
05:56:00
@Alison... this is golden... I will cite you when I quote this in future 🔥

Kim, my grandson has a strong desire to learn how to make and edit YouTube videos as a possible profession. Do you have any suggestions for ways to learn how to do that? I (grandma) am homeschooling him.

@kelley The best camera to record is the one you have with you! Natural and or window light with a smartphone is great to start. A DSLR camera is a good upgrade. And find videos similar to what you want to make helps you learn how to make them!

Thank you, Isabel, Tove, Kim and Iris for sharing your experiences. This was really valuable to me. Please do let me know, if any of you wants to share your experiences with the German audience. In my country any form of non-coercive schooling is still illegal. Let's spread the word about all the possibilities! I'm around in the AERO app and also open to connect via email. biancageburek@gmail.com

Let's make more centers!
Roger Horton
06:08:13
Thank you very much for organizing this, and to each of the presenters. Very interested to learn more about this.
Stephanie Sewell
06:08:19
Yes, more centers would be good. It is a totally different thing to leave school when you don't have a centre to land in. Those teens can feel very isolated...
Ken Danford - North Star
06:08:21
thank you!
