From Abel Valenzuela: UCI and UCLA working on fellowship on Professional Development that is not work based. UCLA’s model is from UCI and I believe Angela Chen will discuss

The scholarship can be structured as non-employment but that means following key structures to ensure and make clear to students and CBOs/community orgs that it is not employment. Immigrants Rising can provide you with instructions on how to do this.
Abel Valenzuela
56:43
Students learning about the role of CBOs, schools, private industry is key to their learning and development. This is different from an internship or work. The engagement with orgs and CBOs, to be clear, is not work. It’s learning, experimental and other benefits for the student.

Are any current institutions working with employers in hiring non DACA students through private contracting work?
Abel Valenzuela
59:46
Tanya. There are some efforts. Illiana Perez is a key expert on this and is part of Immigrants Rising. You can reach out to for info.

@ Tanya. to follow up on my previous comment, employers cannot HIRE non-DACA individuals. But there's more information at immigrantsrising.org/making-money

Timeframe to get a fellows program up and running. Much faster at private institutions. At UCLA, it’s taken us about 8 months but not quite yet there. Lots of vetting by different campus units going all the way to the top.
