Encouraging Vaccines but having many opt out.

Ardis Yahna, Children Unlimited - shared an update on the vaccines in Carroll County. One of our local hospitals, Memorial Hospital in North Conway, was able to open up a vaccination pod last Saturday morning the 20th. Children Unlimited and our local Public Health did the outreach to centers across Carroll County. We included Childcare Centers and Rec Centers and reached out to 33 programs. 106 vaccinations were given at the closed pod clinic last Saturday to individuals from 25 child care and rec centers across the county. Their 2nd vaccines are scheduled for another Saturday pod on April 10th. Wanted to share because it was a great collaborative opportunity and such a success!!

Only 50% of my staff were willing to get vaccinated which was a big disappointment to me but I cannot force them to do so. Fortunately, the local SAU55 allowed us to become part of their closed POD.

I've been fully vaccinated since January because I work perdiem elsewhere, my staff are opening it up to the idea.

19 our staff were able to get their first vaccine at the Carrol County Child Care Only clinic that Memorial hosted last Saturday. To date, we have 31 of 40 who have started and/or completed their vaccination process. We should have the majority fully vaccinated around April 10.

Most are receiving the vaccine. Several have had severe reaction which is causing others to not want to get vaccine.

In the Upper Valley the Public Health Network also coordinated two clinics for schools/child care in the last week/this weekend

I did not ask why, but my staff is all in the same age bracket 19-25.

No reason for choosing NOT to be vaccinated. They wont even discuss. we've even offered an incentive and have explained the importance of safety in our center.

We had an LPRN come in and talk privately one on one to those who had concerns. That led to 4 of 9 to decide to do it.

13 out of 18 are getting the vaccine. 1 cannot right now due to doctor's orders due to side affects of Covid. A few are not because they are sure of the "long term affects". Trying not to force the issue, but I am strongly encouraging

Same as others - our reserve is gone, we received two PPP loans which will be used by August, so we need to raise parent fees starting July 1. And we are fortunate to be able to draw on our investments (in the neighborhood of nearly a quarter of a million dollars last year and next).

Agree that staffing costs are increasing. Cost to hire, pay and onboard them. It's a catch 22, parents can't afford to pay more for child care and programs cannot afford to absorb the costs.

I think the high schools should be promoting the field for future college students, as well as community colleges. I have had academic advisors for ECE promote elementary ed to my staff who are in school for ECE

I had all my federally consolidated student loans forgiven after working for nonprofits for 10 years. It was a long haul but worth it!

We are losing/competing with degreed preschool qualified teachers to public schools (understandably) due to pay and School Care insurance which is what teachers get (and is fabulous coverage).

So group insurance is a great idea for many...

Great to know about student loan forgiveness. Although that must be for those working in non-profits, not child care centers who are forced to provide low wages so it does not impact family costs.

Forget non profits. They should do it for any child care center staff!

Unfortunately, the Feds do not pro-rate service at non-profits, so you have to do the full time. Historically, there are a lot of complications and barriers with that process.

I have a big wait list for a small town, my staff is getting burn out, from working OT to meet the demands of our community. Burn out that will reduce my staff even more

We are under DHHS... we provide an important human service. Why couldn't early childhood teachers be considered state employees in regards to benefits and salary subsidies?

Yes, it's for nonprofits only and you have to work the equivalent of full time which the Feds interpret as 30+ hrs so while good for those that meet the criteria, too many are shut out.

The primary reason many women work in child care is that they can be with their children who are enrolled at the center. Once their children move on to public school, they are ready to move on to a different career.

My experience is that programs owners/directors, the child care workforce, and parents are spread so thin that they often do not have the time to testify, advocate, or keep caught up on the issues.

Our son grew up in childcare, and is now teaching special needs high school students!

I serve the working poor. Working moms who work to get health insurance. Working moms who make a little after they pay for child care but need that small amount to make sends meet. Working moms who do not want to lose their career path while they have children from birth to entrance into public school. Even public preschool and Kindergarten do not meet the needs of full time working moms.

Yes, I am a "private" company, we serve families with the same families that "non-Profits" provide. I have families on state scholarships, families who just make it financially. The extras comes out of my own pocket, to help these families have quality care. Thanks to organizations like CCRR, SELA, DHHS, it has helped us to stay in business. even before Covid

Our licensing rules also have to be realistic in relation to what the field and programs are experiencing in real time. Programs need a moratorium and/or reprieve from rules that are now creating a barrier to staffing and operations. We need rules that keep children safe, but we also need to have programs able to stay open to provide that care.

This year I had to hire a one on one teacher to assist a 2 year old that will be on an IEP, Without that one on one, that child would not thrive and there is no child care center that I can refer the family to..... we need full time child care centers for families with children with disabilities who need early intervention.
