Nanaimo Paddlers Online Skill Session: VHF-DSC(M) Radio Review Clinic - Shared screen with speaker view
Hi everyone, good to see you all!
Would a Pan Pan have been advised at a list of 20 degrees?
Good question, Edgar. Will note it for Q & A after.
The boat position, boat description and crew details could have been with CG before Mayday was issues saving lots of stress.
I bought a Standard Horizon HX870 a year ago and I can't figure out how to adjust the squelch. I follow the instructions in my manual, but I either get rid of the static and can't hear transmissions or have to strain to hear transmissions through the static. Any ideas?
Carolyn, I have that same radio and I took it to the Harbour Chandler and had them show me how to do it.
For beginners without a VHF can they use a cellphone to relay a May Day? There a a lot of new paddlers w/o training or equipment.
Mary and Paul, questions both noted.
Likely thru 911
*16 on your cell phone dials coast guard directly
Is the new VHF course manual materially different from the old one….should we get a new one to stay up to date?
Are there significant changes in the new manual?
Thanks Julie, noted.
If we’re doing general communications, do we do the 3x calling to the person and saying our own name?
I was told to do a radio check on channel 10 - Winchelsea Control.
Jennifer (for now)
Can you say again where we can find a map to let us know which WX channel to tune to (I think you said there was one?)
Jennifer (for now)
BC Ferries uses 11 here for Victoria traffic
I believe Channel 3
I Managed to communicate with coast guard from the bunsbys. What range would they be at ?
Thanks Mike! And thanks to you too Carolyn.
Sent the link to you Caroline for the weather guide Mike was talking about.
Gotta go, thanks Caroline and Mike!
Channel 11 is Victoria marine traffic - I have called that channel to get through to BC Ferries if I need info about ferry traffic
Thank you Mike and Caroline! Hope to see you on the water :)
Thanks Caroline and Michael great review info.
Here is the link to the map of the weather reporting stations, etc.: https://www.ec.gc.ca/meteo-weather/meteo-weather/default.asp?lang=En&n=451553A6-1
Wikipedia has a list of CG stations/bases (scroll down for Western Region), but I haven't been able to quickly find a map. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_Coast_Guard_Bases_and_Stations
what ds radio do you recommend if purchasing
MOB, does it get broadcast or could I use it to mark a position where my hatch cover went down ??
If travelling in remote region with radio off and mayaday required how long for GPS signal to be acquired
Thank-you Caroline and Mike, great!!
This was great! Thanks Mike and Caroline
