Deal with this on a regular basis. Pain medication is one way but what we see the most of is mental health issues and a way to cope is start with medication then go heroine.

Very few pain management providers know how to teach their clients very powerful and effective psycho-social pain management skills. These skills exist, but very few physicians are learning about them or teaching them.

01:34:08
Would love to see resources for these powerful and effective psychosocial pain management skill, Christina...do you have some evidence based and reliable resources?? Thank you, for sharing~

01:38:38
Part of this problem is that addiction is recognized as a BIO-psycho/social-spiritual disorder, BUT the ONLY biochemical tools offered people are MORE medications. We do know however, the feeding the brain what it needs to function optimally helps people learn and access all sorts of skills, including recovery. This is why we feed children in schools. Adults also need well-fed brains. Let's add optimum nutrition to the prevention and recovery conversation.

01:39:08
Would love resources and guidance on settlement spending opportunities and programming.

01:40:08
For pain management resources, see Dr. Joe Tatta, The Las Vegas Recovery Center with Dr. Mel Pohl, and others. Please contact me directly and I will gather other resources for you. 303-888-9617. christinaveselak@gmail.com

01:41:10
Thank you, Christina!

01:45:36
Semper Fi, sir!

01:50:28
For prioritizing Pharma Settlement money - the Chief Tom had it right - the solution needs to be data driven - so investing in the right information systems is critical for implementing your solution and tracking progress - this is a system going beyond the HIDTA Maryland overdose tracking system

01:51:00
Yes indeed!

01:51:23
Chief Synan, do you have recommendations on how to approach this conversation with law enforcement. We hear from several our local law enforcement partners that see harm reduction strategies as enabling the addict. We know we can address this complex without L.E. support!

01:51:47
we can't***

01:52:34
In February 2021 in response to the recently introduced Police and Criminal Justice Reform Bill, Chairpersons and Faculty of Oakton Community College collaborated with members of the Niles Police Department to build the Mental Health and Crisis Response for Public Safety Certificate. The goal of this Certificate is to provide training for police officers and other public safety professionals, aligned with the required training needs for police officers articulated in the bill. This program provides the knowledge to understand the neuroscience of addiction, medication-assisted treatments, community-reintegration, mental health and substance use disorders and the associated stigmas so that public safety persons can be collaborative partners in creating positive community outcomes.

01:52:49
Melissa S. Adams, Homeless Liaison Officer, Wheeling, West Virginia.

01:53:20
YES. It's not always just getting them 'sober'. how can we expect someone to be successful if we tell them treatment is only residential or only 8-5 so now they have to quit their job. and where do their kids go while they're gone? etc etc.

01:53:22
Robust recovery is a several year journey.

01:55:11
Such a powerful message, Chief Synan. Thank you!

01:55:13
Diversion Drug Courts are a huge piece of this plan. Team effort between LE, Prosecutors Offices and Public Defenders

01:55:34
In our area, we are lacking therapists and councilors for everyone who needs them. We have no beds available, no matter if we had funding.

01:55:37
Thank you Chief Synan for talking about this mindset! We are doing something very similar here in Lancaster County PA called the SecondChancePA program.

01:55:50
Thank you Chief Synan! Amazing work you are doing. Very inspiring.

01:55:53
Kevin Ballard I agree about the drug court.

01:56:19
Nick Mau I am the Chief of Police in Saline MI however I came from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office previously. I can share what we did at the county around harm reduction. One big piece you need to remind the officers is that harm reduction isn't perfection. We partnered with community mental health peer support specialist. Feel free to reach out if you would like to chat more. mradzik@cityofsaline.org.

Our community has a leave behind program for placing Narcan in homes where we have responded to a drug overdose or a suspected drug overdose. My hope is that this will result in destigmatizing the use of this lifesaving drug. Next--training for administering it. My city council gets the training next month!
