@Kimberly they did this at the charter school where I used to teach and I never actually enforced it. Admin asked teachers to tell kids who didn’t even know how to write or tell time yet to sign in and out of the bathroom… like… What?

Gerry, you probably know that Jo Symes was similarly motivated as you when she started Progressive Education - https://www.progressiveeducation.org

Can you speak a little more about how you and your separated spouse navigated making decisions about your children’s education together? I know so many people struggle with this - even the ones who aren’t separated.
Stephanie Sewell

there are more questions higher up in the chat

I find so much regret in all the things I could have done with homeschooling that I didn't. My kids are now teens. Anyone else like this, or am I all alone? lol

The film Class Dismissed, which we saw at an AERO conference, I thought was very helpful. Showed us we didn't need to be perfect. That the process was more of an organic one, and that too was part of the whole learning process.

Here is a colourful version of my paper about to be published in CONNECT https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#search/Roger+Holds/QgrcJHrnsbQQwPrWGVlBfxvKMGBcMNmFJLL?projector=1&messagePartId=0.1

It was after we saw that film that we decided to "jump" into homeschooling.
Susan M

Susan M. As parents we learn with our kids so it’s not unusual to wish we could do it over again! I sure do. But I think we can forgive ourselves—we are all works in process. I was able to use some of what I learned from my kid’s experience, in my work in education—too late for my own kid alas.

I liked Kimberly's question, and I am curious to know more about young people's world of music and culture if you could comment on that -Kimberly Wilder to Everyone: 09:34 AMWhat kind of music or culture have you had on your show?
Susan M
01:33:02
Thanks @deborourke. Working on the balance between celebration and mourning.

@Susan As an adult I’m glad I still “discovered” self-directed education later in my life. “De-schooling” is a valuable experience regardless of age. Realizing that you’ve let gatekeepers/old “assessments” of your intelligence/capabilities limit you… We can’t turn back the clock but we can still get a lot of value out of decolonizing and de-schooling our minds!
Derek Sturm
01:33:57
And a lot of cost, more free options would help the parents
Stephanie Sewell
01:34:07
Yes. that is so true. Parents who are contemplating leaving school definitely need scaffolding
Susan M
01:34:29
@Juliet. Thanks. Still working on de-schooling myself. :)
Roy Karp
01:34:50
@Peter - Are there ways for AERO itself to become a more democratic organization, engaging members perhaps through Sociocratic Circles and Sub-Circles?
Peter Berg
01:35:20
@Roy - yes
Derek Sturm
01:35:46
Sounds like we need a call in podcast that caters solely to parents getting the help they need
Stephanie Sewell
01:35:50
great point, Bruno
Cian
01:36:32
Agreed, great point. Language makes a difference.
Mihai Banulescu
01:37:50
Bruno - fully agree, let’s chat more! there’s a model of traditional vs modern vs postmodern schooling that respects all (maybe too much for my revolutionary tastes :) by Rob McLeod, reinventing education podcast
Stephanie Sewell
01:38:42
That preference for in -person is true for so many youth, especially right now.
Juliet Silveira
01:38:54
I think there’s a lot of parents who are still scared to talk about the fact that they’ve chosen an SDE option for their children because of social stigma. The more we speak out and make others confident to talk about the same, the more people will catch on. But agreed that more affordable/public options are super important for parents…
Derry Hannam
01:39:14
Great sharing Gerry - thank you!!
