Chat is back on! Please show some love for Scot and Michelle!

01:25:14
Does anyone have a suggested resource to show someone how mocking someone’s accent is hurtful - I was in a situation last weekend where someone was mocking someone and the way they may speak for humor - I tried to explain how that type of thing is hurtful but also when you know something is hurtful you shouldn't do it. They were not receptive of that and in fact then pushed back that it's not hurtful. This person is smart, they care about others and I'd like to send something to them so they can try to understand.

01:25:25
Wow Michelle. Thank you for connecting Grief with Liberation <3 !!

01:25:32
WhenMichelle was talking about grief, it made me think about how violence is so normalized under racialized capitalism

01:26:32
Thank you Michelle. I so appreciate your work. <3

01:26:33
An attendee asked about my comment about compromise. I don’t think we should compromise with genocidal white nationalists nor with far right, fascist policy makers. Halfway between here and genocide is not acceptable as a prize, obviously. But pluralism requires compromise as does coalition building. That desire is easily lost for very legitimate reasons, and when that happens, conditions worsen. If we can’t compromise in politics, the alternative is force, and that is the authoritarians creed.

01:26:42
Soooo appreciating all of these panelists in this beautiful tapestry. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

01:26:43
Thanks, Michelle...for reminding me to allow space for grief

01:26:48
So true!

01:27:27
I recommend Witches Midwives and Nurses by Barbara Ehrenreich is historical context that encompasses everything in a way to inspire our organizing Its a one day read . Please read

01:27:44
Wow!

"the right kind of white": whew.

01:28:04
Capitalism requires inequality, racism enshrines it - Ruth Wilson Gilmore, in answer to a question in the Q&A

Powerful concept, "the right kind of white"...

"We hold that contradiction in silence." What an important naming for this and many other areas. Thank you.

01:31:56
"outsource the racist violence"

01:31:58
"white people with class power outsource their racial violence to white people without class power." LOVE THIS. Thank you!

Such an important distinction to make. THANKYOU

01:32:59
the sum of all these analyses is JUST BRILLIANT. I am in awe, and so grateful.

01:33:04
Holding contradictions in silence and outsourcing strong-arming. Wow.

01:33:05
they are using code words to make it soundok to do

01:33:12
YES

01:33:13
white people with class power outsource racist violence to white people without class power and people of color without class power. ++++

01:33:15

01:33:26
yup yup - the way the WASPs "let" the Irish immigrants become "a little better type of white' if they became cops

01:33:46
Hey folks, if you want to message the whole chat, change your settings to “panelists and attendees” in the blue drop down above the chat box :)

01:33:48
That outsourcing happened at Smith College. The President of Smith is white but she made sure that the cafeteria workers and security guards took the heat when there was an issue with a Black student and access to College space.

01:34:33
Yes!

01:34:48
Still digesting this, so profound: white people with class power outsource racist violence to white people without class power and people of color without class power.

01:34:48
Would you consider turning off the chat for a bit? It's popping up over the subtitles.

01:34:57

01:34:57

“Where the stones know your name.” Beautiful.

01:56:23
Ugh I’m crying.

01:56:24
+++ Justin, White Supremacy is totally immersed in colonization both on Turtle island and globally. Absolutely dismantling white supremacy has to be based in decolonizing and reclaiming indigeneity

01:56:25
Thank you Misha. I did what you advised. I have been part of Together Colorado. We are a multi-racial faith-based organization. We are almost finished with a two-year campaign to change the way law enforcement can identify and arrest people, especially BIPOC and poor people. It will be fully passed and signed by the governor next week. Police will no longer be permitted to be sloppy and act out racist practices through the use of showup identifications. We are white and black and Asian and Latinx and we worked as a team to prevent the trauma of incarceration of innocent people. The criminal legal system is messed up and prisons need to be dramatically changed but this new law will slow the prison pipeline.

01:56:26
@LindaBookey: I’m especially grateful for Scot Nakagawa’s understandings of white nationalism and antisemitism and in my experience white Christians have a lot of fragility around white Christian hegemony

01:57:24
As a committed anti-Zionist Jew, I don't think it serves collective liberation narratives to pretend that diasporist politics where (almost) everyone else has a homeland and we (Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, Sephardi) depend on the hospitality of others is not a risky strategy. It may be the only long-term survival strategy that may work out for ourselves and others as well as being ethically sound but that doesn't mean it has a good chance of working out.

01:57:24
