Barney Jeavons from Kick Arts UK. I’m an interloper really as I don’t live in Brighton but I do manage a Brighton band! I love what this group does and this is a very important topic too. Hope you can forgive me for joining! I lwas invited to join this group when I was supporting all the Brighton venues for MVT but I got too busy to keep that up. I manage, consult and work as an agent. Folk/altrock/theatre/electronica.

Tamsin Shasha

Thanks Beth. Really good initiative. As I said in dm happy to help. Got to go now, but here’s info of 3 shows in a garden: https://www.brightonfringe.org/whats-on/lionhouse-37171/

I don’t have anything to add at this point but just wanted to thank Beth for sharing her experiences.
Anna Jefferson
01:01:35
Is the list of venues who have signed it made public?
Siobhán Nicholas
01:01:44
Thank you Kai and Beth. Oh My God Beth now that I tech for Hanging Hooke and White Feather Boxer {you trained me well!} I so empathise with your experience. On UK tours - so many venues that are all white male orientated back stage. Never had the fart in a box but certainly experienced rudeness and blooming laziness. Hey Ho

I had felt very unsafe in Brighton since bars re-opened. The amount of drunk people on the streets is pretty scary
Ruby she/her
01:08:02
Yes Beth. I also noticed how during lockdown often the only people on the streets were construction workers, of who the majority were cis men, and the lack of ownership over my streets I felt. Just interesting to note
Louise Blackwell (she/her)
01:09:00
On the shared training note LOOKOUT has some spare free spaces on a Disability and Inclusion workshop on Weds 23rd June 10am - 1pm online run by Disability and Access thanks to our CRF funding. Email me on louise@projectlookout.org if you'd like a place.

This has been a thoughtful time. I resonate with Marina and Beth in the realisation of what has been tolerated and assimilated in the past and needs to be checked now. I have to leave now but will definitely be taking these thoughts into my work at Clearcut and Brighton Dome. If anyone wants to join in the cafe later see you there - if you want to contact me I’m on kyla.booth-lucking@brightondome.org

I remember the Marly poster too - it was fantastic
Laura McDermott - ACCA (she/her)
01:13:10
Positive feedback is useful to receive! We received an email complaining about our gender neutral bathrooms entitled “in defence of women’s safety” only this week
Ruby she/her
01:13:35
A friend of mine now makes a point of making a complaint if there are not all gender toilets in the venue
Siobhán Nicholas
01:14:12
And The Marly pub is a lovely mellow safe pub to be in - especially if you're working upstairs in the theatre
Anna Jefferson
01:15:17
Is there a working group in brighton around women safety and the arts?

That is an important point, Carmen. So much bad practice is very deeply entrenched in our sector. Being honest and trying to address it together is important and difficult work.
Ruby she/her
01:18:59
Thanks Carmen, and hear what you say about safe space - I’m always hesitant to say a safe is space for everyone, because I’m not sure you can guarantee it is
Anna Jefferson
01:20:00
I would be happy to be involved
Beth O'Leary ACCA she/her
01:20:06
Me too
Faith Dodkins (she/her)

Thanks to everyone who’s shared xx
Ruby she/her
01:21:07
yeah pace is a huge problem in the industry
Siobhán Nicholas
01:21:13
So sad to hear this Carmen. The public face is not always the true heart of the space - a shame and and a bit of a shock. Take care and good luck
Louise Blackwell (she/her)
01:21:31
Thank you to everyone for sharing today
Carmen D'Cruz (she/they)
01:22:18
I'm so sorry I need to go to another meeting but thank you everyone for speaking (and listening!) xxx

I need to dash off too - but thank you it was an amazing session.
