Kurtis, I’m always wishing that the relationship between sales rep and bookstore that we enjoy is something done so well by us little guys that the big guys should emulate. Is there any way that we can convince the big guys to do this?
Carol Price

As a follow up, Kurtis, I think the key is “independent sales rep” as opposed to in-house rep.

Thanks Carol - I’ve got this question down to ask in the Q&A

Agree! It’s so hard to buy front list without a relationship

Annie, reporting to Bookscan and NYT bestseller lists will help show that your store has influence. If you can start reporting - if you’re not already - that will give you some traction to get reps to reach out to you.

Carol, I’ve been doing that since I opened five years ago. But thank you for the suggestion!

It depends which kind of reps you want to reach out. Commission reps do tend to send edelweiss markups and updates

Hi Lise!

Many small presses would love to get included in Edelweiss, but the cost of $2400 per year is prohibitive. Can you recommend something else small presses can use that’s effective?

01:25:13
Great Annie! I would just mention it in emails when you’re reaching out to a rep or a publisher to ask for a rep.

Hey Annie! I have found asking on the Indie Bookseller Facebook group, has been helpful for me. People in my area send me their contact and it helps make the connection. I've gotten two reps this way just this summer.

My two cents for mid-size publishers who want to establish relationships with booksellers: Find out who the buyers at stores are and find out what they like to read, what sells well; instead of sending them mass marketing, send them books based on their interests/sales
