What is the difference between HS-CCC Mixed and Combination?

33:35
Dantè Golden, Legislative Aide, office of Senator John Laird

34:17
Are the "HS Only" courses typically offered on HS campuses, or on CC campuses in "middle college" type programs? Or both?

35:44
Why is there a push for the "high school only" DE classes? Doesn't this limit the benefit of the students truly identifying as college students?

35:51
What has been the barrier to getting more formal dual enrollment opportunities?

36:12
Are there any capacity issues for community colleges to add high school students to enrollment?

36:20
Is there a system where we can track students from HS through college?

36:31
Why is the success marker comm college transfer? Why not terminal comm college degrees, esp. CTE?

37:06
Yes

38:54
@Tinihsa and @Alle - there are a number of barriers, and many partnerships are working through those - instructor and support staff capacity, misunderstandings about compliance issues, a cumbersome enrollment process …. but there are amazing partnerships who are providing creative ways to minimize or eliminate barriers

40:54
Is a link to this slide presentation available?

42:25
PPIC report is available here: https://www.ppic.org/publication/dual-enrollment-in-california/

43:07
@johnhadad Combination means students are enrolled in both HS Only courses AND courses that have that HS-CC mix.

43:31
TY!

44:34
Non-transferrable courses can also include pre-recs required by the partner college in Math and English pathways

44:45
do we know why latinos and blacks do not enroll in college as much as Asians and whites

44:59
@JohnStark, it’s not either/or, it’s that these HS Only courses could expand access to DE for students who may not be participating independently

45:01
Unfortunately, I have to go right now, but would love the recording!

45:10
Wheelhouse Full Set of Dual Enrollment reports can be found here: https://education.ucdavis.edu/leg-college-0

46:02
@Mitchell Booz: Wheelhouse will post the presentation here sometime in the next few days on this page: https://education.ucdavis.edu/leg-college-0

47:00
Vocational/CCTE programs often sponsored by industry partners specifically due to a lack of trained professionals in that industry and access to high paying vocations

48:27
Don't ECHS & MCHS students complete AA degrees concurrently to HS diploma? If so, is it surprising that nearly half of them would still enroll in 2-year colleges after graduation?

48:28
There is such a wide range in CTE/CE careers, degrees and certificates - from very high wage to very low wage - and of course many CTE/CE courses are transferable

51:43
Such a good point PPIC! CCAP should be in alignment with AB 705

51:47
thank you for the highlighting the intersection with AB 705!

51:59
@ Melissa Reeve Not all ECHS/MCHS students are AA completers at time of graduation

52:31
Do instructors on HS campuses have to have K12 teaching credentials as well as the masters required for community colleges?

53:00
@ Joann Mathias... No

53:24
Not Joann unless it's specifically a condition in the CCAP MOU.

53:26
Does the idea that AB705 and CCAP should be aligned mean that community colleges are completely out of the business of remediation? Apologies if that question is a bit roughly worded. I think AB705 means one thing for students who have graduated high school, not sure if it should or does mean the same thing for current high school students

54:12
Great point Stephen!

54:15
Olga, great presentation. Can you make your presentation available?

55:08
I see and understand the large role of community colleges in the DE efforts. Is there a coordinated effort for the CSUs and UCs to join in this work?

56:07
@Stephen, data from AB 705 implementation so far has found that traditional remediation courses do not lead to increased success in gateway Math & English courses for any student groups, including DSPS, ESL, and others. Enrollment directly in credit-bearing courses with corequisite supports will be the default placement policy under full AB 705 implementation.

58:30
I see Stephen's point. Those classes wouldn't necessarily be remediation for high school students (i.e. students wouldn't be behind if they were taking an "Algebra 2"-level college course in 9th or 10th grade).

58:45
Or even 11th or 12th grade

59:42
@ Tressa Overstreet & Robert Pimentel... do the Fresno K12 district and CC district have shared positions such as a college counselor funded by both institutions?

01:00:00
@Wesley - absolutely. All that data (or most) is for first-time to college students who are working towards transfer or a degree. In my mind, the same premise may not directly apply to high school students who are also working towards a high school diploma. On one hand, maybe it does because they're taking college level courses. On the other, as Noah indicated, are we certain there is no benefit to instruction from the colleges at the high school level to high schoolers? Maybe we are, but I don't know that we've established that premise in the legislation.

01:00:57
Hi everyone, we will send a follow up to registrants with the publications and recording.

01:01:06
Thank you Ria!

01:01:44
Thank you so much (rtrickey@nsdcpromise.org)!

01:02:08
Naomi! Nice to be here with you and so many other DE practitioners and re-designers. We’ve moved systematically toward including DE in nearly every Career Academy in OUSD; it’s a concrete evidence of college and career readiness. Yes! Green Soup! I have a secret spot in Oakland, where I am happy to slurp with you!!

01:02:33
@Stephen, ah I understand now. That's a good point and I will need to look into it further. Feel free to email me at wesley.whitaker@asm.ca.gov if you'd like to discuss further!

01:02:47
Thank you; much appreciated, Ria.

01:03:30
So excited by the innovative work happening in Fresno! Kudos to Tressa, Robert, and their teams.

01:03:45
Great discussion and presentations. Thanks, all.

01:05:48
Very clear vision - that you @DrLowe

01:06:20
@Mitchell Booz, hi there... We currently don't have a liaison that goes back and forth but it has been in our plans to have someone. We wrote a grant through college futures and a position was a part of this plan. COVID did not allow us to make that hire but we have done some similar things though the k-16 collaborative

01:07:02
yes, we need to integrate dual enrollment within an overall equity-minded college completion strategy. thankyou Dr, Lowe

01:07:19
Guided Pathways and structure really helps students of color and parents understand the dual enrollment process

01:07:38
@Robert P. Thank you. Yes, I met Tressa at a conference and had a conversation about that effort a while back

01:08:38
Is the K16 Collaborative a joint K12/CC district group that connects regularly?

01:11:31
how new is the dual enrollment program and do we know if this program is working

01:12:10
Building on Stephen Bass's earlier question: have "remedial" (from college standpoint) math and English classes as well as ESL classes offered at dual enrollment NOT been found to increase later college enrollment among the students who participate?

01:12:44
Please balance explicit project goals of four year transfer with CTE completion. For us in k-12, it’s not just 4 year college ready, but career and community ready

01:13:08
Nice to see Career Ladders Project here too!

01:13:47
YES. Access with success in order to ensure academic harm is avoided and academic confidence is built!

01:14:02
great point, Tressa! Especially in Math where confidence is everything

01:14:05
Yes, DE has great promise, but in getting the cart behind the horse, how do we supply the qualified teachers - especially at the high schools. "Qualified" goes beyond just having the right masters degree. Research has shown that allowing students to see "like others" as their teachers is critical in career choice - for example, females enroll in and pass STEM DE courses at the same rate as males, but three months later, when it comes to college enrollment, they are far less than half of the STEM degree seekers. So, how do we get qualified, female, and people of color into programs to create qualified teachers?

01:14:36
@john +1

01:14:51
The food pantry feeds our students

01:15:16
Thanks Dr. Lowe, that’s a huge opportunity to bring in dual enrollment students to the full set of supports embedded in the Guided Pathways reform agenda

01:15:26
@john+2

01:16:18
Where is the explicit consideration of Linked Learning initiatives, does Fresno USD use Linked Learning? DE is an important component of LL in Oakland, not the other way around. It’s an important k-12 ally in this work.

01:17:40
@serene - California Community Colleges transfer students to 4 years, and also offer certificates and degrees in the trades - including medical trades

01:18:00
And also have 2 year degrees - we do it all!

01:19:07
Are there any models of dual- or planned concurrent enrollment with 4-year colleges aimed at college completion?

01:19:11
It will also be important to consider the K12 Strong Workforce Program grants. Grantees are encouraged to offer Dual Enrollment. These grants are targeted toward Career Education.

01:19:33
@Eva - yes - many!

01:20:33
@Naomi can you send me info./links. I'd like to learn more. eblanco@scu.edu

01:35:14

01:35:56
thank you Adrienne we use UCS for other things so i get them mixed up!

01:37:04
Yes, both institutions are great resources. https://race.usc.edu/

01:37:07
K-16 is supporting advanced degrees and out district is also supporting teachers earning advanced degrees.

01:38:57
We are collaborating with our CC to ensure advanced courses of study will meet minimum quals. Our CC Deans are great at reviewing graduate programs of study and the alignment with the CC academic departments

01:40:30
yes-Robert... some independent colleges do not accept DuE courses. Private/Independent colleges are all a bit different.

01:43:53
Tressa- I would love to see that. I've been developing something similar. Loudon@ltcc.edu

01:44:09
In terms of types of dual enrollment - we can think of them working together to provide scaffolded transitions. For example starting with a course taught at the HS by a HS teacher who is a college adjunct, then a course at the HS taught by a visiting professor from the college, then students can move to taking courses independently at the college

01:44:11
Thank you all so much. This was such great info and an amazing discussion.

01:44:20
@Tressa I would love to see the matrix as well. Can that be included in what you all share with us after the webinar?
