Josette Gates`
35:53
Hello All, I’m Josette Gates, I am an EV driver that resides in West Spokane. I’m a graduate student currently studying tranportation and environmental policy and management.
Josette Gates`
40:34
Does the $14B include the recent Biden infrastructure bill/s?
Susan Meyer Spokane Transit
40:40
Susan Meyer here. I'm the ceo at STA, serve on the SRTC board, and the board of Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center. I live in Liberty Lake. Thank you to Lois and the great team at SRTC for bringing us together tonight.
Kylee Jones, SRTC
43:16
@Josette - It does not include Biden's infrastructure bill
Lindsey Shaw
45:59
social security just had its first raise in 38 years
Lindsey Shaw
48:07
Also Washington has the most upside down tax code. Mega rich people need to pay taxes
Melanie
49:45
If the rich payed enough taxes maybe the buses could run like regular on the weekend and not need us to pay to board.
Jules
51:45
A Washington state income tax could pay for a number of transportation initiatives.
Josette Gates`
53:51
Amazon is heavy user of transportation infrastructure like airports and roads but pays very little in taxes compared to their profits.
Lindsey Shaw
56:08
I hope we are all working on a more user friendly multimodal transportation model
David Seaman
59:18
Uber and Lyft aren't actually categorized as active are they? or was that an accident?
David Seaman
59:32
👍
Josette Gates`
01:01:39
Did anyone mention problems with road rage, aggressive driving, and accidents?
Melanie
01:02:36
People I talk to want the free buses back. I know it was a covid thing but I think it would be good for the community to not require $2 every time.
Lindsey Shaw
01:02:52
a bus in dogtown would be nice
Josette Gates`
01:03:02
I agree Melanie
Larry Luton
01:06:32
With the growth that EVs are expected to see between now and 2045, have your forecasts included a recognition that gas tax revenues will see a dramatic decline by 2045?
Tom Sahlberg
01:06:55
Question - what part does SRTC play in the "Bridging the Valley" project??
Tom Sahlberg
01:08:06
👍
David Seaman
01:13:44
Is there a consideration for the increased wear and tear on roads from the increased average weight of evs? I understand commercial freight has a larger impact, but do you find that impacts future costs?
Mike Ulrich, SRTC
01:14:38
https://waroadusagecharge.org/
lbollenback
01:17:34
Susan may have a thought on vehicle weight in a large vehicle with the STA buses
David Seaman
01:18:15
Thanks!
Larry Luton
01:19:30
How much impact has the new WA Active Transportation Plan had on your plans for 2045?
Debra Morgan
01:21:25
forgot to mention that you can also get fuel vouchers if you have a vehicle
Josette Gates`
01:22:42
Interesting article about transit oriented development: "Developers Offer Mobility Services to Lure Car-Free Renters." Bloomberg CityLab. September 8, 2021. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-08/paying-rent-will-get-you-wheels-in-new-car-free-complex?srnd=citylab-transportation
David Seaman
01:25:24
Bus passes really shouldn't be more than 1 dollar, anything more can be quite a lot to handle - especially given how hard it can be to navigate at times
Larry Luton
01:25:36
STA should consider a zero fare program.
David Seaman
01:25:47
would be much nicer!
Jules
01:26:09
Agreed!
Debra Morgan
01:26:46
Even a $10 low-income program for people under a certain income would be better than what it is now.
Shelby Koch
01:27:08
And maybe some routes that aren’t just to downtown (I have no reasonable way to take the bus to school)
Lindsey Shaw
01:27:09
We are seeing so many people being challenged by rent increases that food and clothing are their biggest need and getting them to the places that have those resources has been a huge obsticle
Josette Gates`
01:27:18
Spokane is very car dependent city and one of the main ways to reduce this is to install light rail. Is light rail included in this plan?
Melanie
01:28:48
(no, the video was just a cat-related accident.)
David Seaman
01:29:10
I'm curious about how the region's transportation goals align with other goals - is there any commitment to a vision zero or a goal to reduce vmt and/or carbon emissions? I notice that a lot of our plans involve expanding/widening roads- when there's not a lot of evidence we can throw capacity at traffic to solve congestion
Shelby Koch
01:29:18
Increasing safety for cyclists, pedestrians, & active transport in general would be great. Paint is not the most comforting barrier from vehicles
David Seaman
01:29:33
More choices!
David Seaman
01:29:41
all of the above please!
Lindsey Shaw
01:30:13
I hope that with greenways, bikes become more of a way to get around for my family
Jen B
01:30:18
Is there a Sharecar in Spokane I had read about one at Gonzaga
Melanie
01:30:26
cars are so entitled around here. They won't share the road with bikes and get upset at me trying to cross the street to catch the bus.
Melanie
01:31:05
def. need better bike lanes and cross walks
Shelby Koch
01:31:06
There aren’t enough marked crosswalks and it would help if lights gave pedestrians and/or bikes priority
Larry Luton
01:31:14
Paint is not a safety system for cyclists. Separated bike paths Need to be developed aggresively.
Lindsey Shaw
01:31:33
I have always thought a cross state light rail would be so great for our whole states economy
Stephanie Watson (she/her)
01:32:11
Safety for cyclists of all ages is huge! More walking paths and greenways! Make transit in line with rider schedules and service hubs for work and neighborhood destinations.
Shelby Koch
01:32:43
Would be great if kiddos could safely bike or walk to school
Melanie
01:33:24
I thought it was weird that buses stop running to early on the weekends. Aren't people more likely to be out having fun later? seems like a gap in service.
Josette Gates`
01:33:46
Studies have shown that buses do not have the same effect on reducing car dependancy. Funding will likely increase to reduce emmissons in the future.
Debra Morgan
01:34:17
We also need more wheelchair ramps in many neighborhoods. Many of the sidewalks in my area don't have them making me have to use my walker in the street because I can't get it up the curb.
Larry Luton
01:34:21
Yes, Shelby! Safe Routes to School programs need to be greatly expanded.
David Seaman
01:35:47
"smarter" signals would be great, especially with bike sensors!
Shelby Koch
01:36:07
Especially the one going to the pedestrian bridge!
Josette Gates`
01:36:37
How is the Spokane sustainability plan coordinated with this groups planning? What about re-powering the diesel STA buses when they are “surplus” to electric to reduce particulate emmissions?
Larry Luton
01:37:34
Great question, Josette!
Shelby Koch
01:38:25
Raising crosswalks so that cars have to “enter” the pedestrian space is an interesting way to slow vehicles down that I’ve seen
Josette Gates`
01:38:53
Thanks Larry!
Debra Morgan
01:39:10
That would be so much easier on my cane or my walker, Shelby!
Melanie Elston
01:40:00
What about Deer Park?
Lindsey Shaw
01:40:21
or dogtown?
Josette Gates`
01:41:09
Why are we delaying City Line?!

Lindsey Shaw
01:42:35
oops. the east side of the North Spokane freight highway

Hee hee Lyndsey just kidding :)
Debra Morgan
01:43:09
For bus riders, download the Moovit app. It will tell you how far away the bus is from your stop by GPS. It will also tell you which busses to take and where to get off if you put in an address or even a business name.

Is there any collaboration with the local universities? I know that most of my classmates drive to campus every single day - sometimes multiple times a day
Tom Sahlberg
01:46:48
Shelby - there is a daily shuttle to/from WSU
Karl Otterstrom
01:47:54
Shelby- STA has pass programs with WSU Spokane, EWU, Gonzaga and the community colleges where their student ID cards double as bus passes. There is no extra charge to ride the bus.
Shelby Koch
01:48:17
Thanks, Tom. I know that many of my classmates still have difficulties accessing routes near them - that the time it would take with changing buses, etc. It would be around an hour to take the bus when it is 20-30 minutes to drive
Shelby Koch
01:48:35
It’s more of actually having routes that are reasonable to use
Mike Ulrich, SRTC

Shelby - depending on where you live, a park and ride can save a lot of time, wear and tear on cars and allow your roommates to skip out on changing buses. They can call 328-7433 to get personalized suggestions for the best way to use the bus for their commute.
Tom Sahlberg
01:50:46
Thank you SRTC and others attending 👏
Kimberly Kinchen (she/her), Fellow, Disability Mobility Initiati
01:50:46
And thank you, it’s been very interesting to see the commonalities the Spokane region shares with the Puget Sound region!

Do we need to have super fancy shelters? Can we do a temp?
Lindsey Shaw
01:52:13
Thank you all for working on this and for asking for us to weigh in
David Seaman
01:52:13
Thank you! I could probably talk about this for hours and hours!
