At The 97Fund, https://the97.fund/ we are open and looking forward to working with corporates through a venture building + investment model to help corporates execute on their growth ambitions working with the startups in our portfolio and network.

To grow the current $32M (2019) received by Ugandan startups to $600M in the next 5 years, as challenged by CK Japheth, will require investment from corporates to match public sector and development partner investments. This may be through corporate social investments, or direct commercial funding through corporate venture capital

There is a great challenge around funding for the Uganda ecosystem, we cannot wait 4 years to grow funding to 5X from current $32M. At The 97Fund we stand ready to work with corporates to structure and provide relevant early stage capital for Ugandan startups. The 97Fund has already been seeded with $1M.

Panel take aways: 1) Corporate sector has to step up and work closer with startups but startups have to be ready and be clear on how they can engage benefits from brand/growth hack/funding/mentorship; 2) Any work done or interventions has to include informal sector, youth and the women - can tap into ecosystem built by UN Agencies and Mastercard Foundation to enable inclusion and reach the grassroots; 3) More needs to be done to get corporate Uganda to participate in driving more funding to early stage companies and achieve 5X funding faster than 4 years. The 97Fund/NSSF/PSFU are all a starting point for this funding support through Covid Relief Fund/Catalytic Fund/Venture Fund.
