Any suggestions for working around/with DOT? Their processes for approval and quick denial are very disheartening for a downtown that's main area is DOT right-of-way.

SaintMarys GA - HPS Commissioner... we have no power to affect change in that people do their own thing and it is often poorly conceived and designed..I.E. the high school allowed students to repair two planters on a very important corner downtown! Nobody consulted the HPC but we are held responsible!

We also have a highway running through the main artery of our downtown and struggle with getting semis to utilize a truck route instead of blowing through downtown.

We have a similar problem here in Monticello. We have four state highways converging on our town square.

Our downtown is 80% deserted with out of town business owners and we are working to reftify that and add new viable businesses so making buildings more attractive is key for our success.

We face property owners of Downtown Historic Business District that hold properties for "Storage Units" or simply won't lease the property out.

We struggle with that as well Susan.

We also have property owners that have held properties in our central business district for generations and have no intention of using them, renovating them, or selling them.

Is the Alumigraphic material safe for historic brick?

There is a fine line in incorporating contemporary design with historic buildings. How do you walk it without ruining the look of your downtown?

The slipcover that becomes contributing - how to explain it to the public.

I really appreciated the information about signage. This one topic that our HPC is often too restrictive. I love the idea of the aluminigraphic. I think this is the answer to several of our signage issues - especially with the restrictions about not painting on previously painted bricks.

Great stuff. I need to digest it all by looking around our downtown again with new eyes.

We have a building downtown that added a second story apartment. There is a setback where they created a deck. It looks great and blends in perfectly in our building-scape.

The comment about "interpreting" architectural styles with infill building is really helpful.

Storage in building downtown Cordele is one of my biggest problem

Their website should have more information if you have any concerns prior to making that decision.

The demising wall idea is fantastic! We need this in our community. The micro-retail is also a great idea for us - especially in light of our high utility costs within the central business district. I think this may work for our community!
