Would you agree that we need public banking throughout the U.S.

41:35
How has charter school law changed from the original law passed in 1993?

41:51
I see this happening with our nearby charter school. They recruit students from my high poverty bilingual school. When the student ends up struggling academically, the charter school will force the child out. When we get the students driven out, they are further behind then their peers and my colleagues and I have to build necessary supports and interventions to fill in the gaps.

44:36
Same in our district, Susie! Why isn't this being tracked yet? Why doesn't the state change the way charters are given per pupil funding??? Paying a year in arrears so the district can use that $ to support the students being pushed out of charter schools seems like a good start.

48:06
White Hat proposed several charter schools in Colorado, but I think we denied them

48:48
We have Imagine charters too

48:57
White Hat managed at least one school in Colo. Spgs.

49:42
I think this is the NEPC report Donald mentioned:https://nepc.colorado.edu/publication/charter-revenue

49:48
In Colorado this year education Reenvisioned BOCES has 2 new brick and mortar classical “contract” schools that are being converted to charters without an application. Brick and mortar contract schools currently are not regulated in statute.

50:16
Also see charters promising adequate resources, for example for special needs, and then when the families realize that is not the case, they have to move their student to a non-charter district school: after student count day of course.... Also, a financial hardship on the district is not a valid reason for the district to deny a charter application.

50:39
how does a brick and mortar "contract school" differ from a charter school?

53:11
Colorado charter law had a requirement about innovation, but it was removed in the late 1990s

53:18
Can anyone provide an update on a bill in the Colorado House? HB22-1294? This is the one that allows for charter school (networks) to become an administrative unit (Charter School Institute). The bill was introduced relatively late in the session and passed out of the House Education Committee on a unanimous vote. What does it mean to Denver if the bill is passed? Charter school networks, DSST and Strive and KIPP could petition to end their contract with DPS and become a separate Administrative Unit (each would need to show that they enroll 2,000 or more students).

53:36
They are a new thing that ERBOCES did the last 2 years. There are 4. They do not have the waivers that charters have or the charter school funding.

59:35
The George Mason law school thing turned into a bit of an embarrassment. Antonin Scalia School of Law has a fun acronym (ASSoL).

01:00:08
Broad works in Colorado, and a former CEA president went through the Broad training

01:06:41
How did you raise money for the longterm campaign in California? How much does it cost annually?

01:06:55
What is meant about "caps?"

01:07:21
I don't know how the CO law has changed along the way. Please explain.

01:07:33
Your last chapter describes six ways to "become pro-public". What specifically can be done to make this a reality in terms of how the public views the education system in Colorado?

01:11:59
In Greeley it is the opposite - charters are for predominately white and not FRL

01:13:52
Legislation where the money follows they kid AFTER Oct count is probably necessary

01:16:07
I would like to see someone research the total amount of money that goes to charters in Colorado. They are continually whining about how they don’t get as much money as traditional schools, but I don’t know that anyone has ever totaled the additional funds that have been allocated through many years. In addition, these schools should be required to share the amount of private funds each school gets.

01:21:37
@Therese- can you send me those slides also?

01:22:44
Most charter schools in Denver received covid PPE funding PLUS the district funding. Everything you all are describing has been occurring in Denver for approximately 15 years.

01:23:04
Yes, Evie, Lots of inequities in Denver!

01:23:10
Are there legislators in CO now who are committed to pushing for changes to require more transparency, and fairer fiscal regulations, and how can they be encouraged to push for change?

01:23:58
link to slides, but I don't have all your emails - so ask for access? https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12s124y1VxwgMpe0UDIFlP4Zsk4LqUHM53aT67vpzNdQ/edit#slide=id.g121460069c3_0_131

01:23:58
Mike: Too many current CO legislators align with Reform agenda.

01:24:35
Please send to alivail@outlook.com Also, the law and waivers. Thanks!

01:24:44
The 1294 bill is being supported by many legislators. Why? how can we convince them to rethink this move?

01:25:09
Preferential enrolment also allows preferential exclusion.

01:25:22
Oh, and our State Board of Education has at least 1 VERY pro-charter person. I encourage you to listen to the words used against Adams 14. It should NOT be an accountability option!!!

01:27:13
We have to start a education committee or PAC

01:27:19
YES!!!

We have a education organization and an independent expenditure committee (IEC).

01:31:06
YES! Sen. Story! ED cmts have become kill committees

01:34:53
Another issue is that those running for supposedly non-partisan positions like school board cannot access state dem funds for their campaigns - and the school boards in Greeley and Windsor were really taken over by groups that call themselves "Guardians"

01:37:38
We must consider the impacts and worries of school districts' charter authority as well! How can local boards be supported in protecting their districts without risking losing that authority? The choices are SO limited. I know you're working on that. Thank you A4PEP!

01:39:57
Manuel is speaking profound truth about enemies within both parties.

01:40:20
New American schools are attempting to unionize!

01:40:28
Manuel: So true! Too many CO legislators that are Reform aligned.Gov Jared Polis was one of the owners of New America Schools.

01:41:09
I don't think Jared Polis has a financial connection to New America Schools any longer.

Evie, correct, Gov Polis sold his shares to his business partner.

What is the status of the State Department of Ed redeveloping the SPF, to be less focused on Stanadardized test scores? Is there even an effort there, as there is in DPS?

Allison: Yes, he's still connected.

I had a 45 minute call with him during his campaign on this exact topic.

01:42:39
Margaret, we covered this in a previous forum. CDE interpreted the law to be very punitive; it was supposed to use GROWTH more than academic achievement.
