In the US, when PhD prepared nurse researchers leave the military and try to go into Academia, there is some discrimination insofar as academic rank is concerned. Many nurses, at least must start out as Assistant Professors, despite 20-30 years of experience in the field. This seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Then the discrimination continues with civilian misperceptions of military veterans. Though they may be very successful, it is often difficult.

What do you think may need to be done to help change the civilian perception of former military members as rigid and too structured?
