Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos

So important to tell students to notify their parents that they’ve arrived safely or they reach out to my office!!
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
23:01
exactly…setting expectations before they go!!
Marja Unkuri-Chadhry
24:03
Yes so true. Also important to encourage students to stay in contact with their parents. Finally, important to have check-ins with students abroad.
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
25:34
I would contact the host and home ISEP coordinator to report the situation
Jamie - Purdue University Fort Wayne
26:25
It's sometimes confusing who to contact at ISEP, and so I would probably start with my URM because they know who to contact
Donna Warner
27:34
Then ask them to ask the host family for information -
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
27:57
Yes, the homestay mom is clearly invested in the student and would notice her absence
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
28:16
Whereas a dorm might be a little more unknown
Marja Unkuri-Chadhry
28:41
Additional question is at which point to file a missing person report that has to be done in accordance with the Argentinian national law. Would ISEP do it ?
McKennah Andrews
29:44
I would imagine that university-owned and supervised housing versus independent housing through a third party landlord could affect the level of complexity in a missing student situation.
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
30:36
i’d be curious as to if/when ISEP would inform the student’s family at home in the US
Marja Unkuri-Chadhry
31:50
Important question: is informing student's family ISEP's or home coordinator's responsibility ?
Nelly Ortiz UPR Bayamon
35:25
Our university also require the student that they have to register their information at the USA Embassy Site like the address at the host country, emergency contacts, etc.
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
37:07
Just the need to talk down the nervous parent immediately before she jumps on a plane…would just make everything more complicated
McKennah Andrews
38:52
Very helpful and good to know! Thank you!
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
45:24
No, we would follow these same steps…I would be curious if there was a means of tracking their phone location?
McKennah Andrews
47:40
It might be creepy, but with all the lovely online tracking of activity, we could ask professors when the last time the missing student logged onto their Moodle page was (which many of our classes have, even if an in-person class), or perhaps there are university tracking abilities for seeing the last SSO login to anything student-account-related, like email, their online registration software, etc.
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
48:09
Totally understandable to not want to be tracked, but even a “find my iPhone” option? If they had that phone type.
Sarah Barr (Nebraska Wesleyan Univ)
50:26
Based on the case study information, it sounds like no one has tried to reach out to the home coordinator
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
52:05
So I’m assuming we would be using the emergency line for weekend?
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
54:18
Well for us we would have to get an emergency team together, including Dean of Students, Student Health & Counseling, University Police who would lead the investigation
Donna Warner
54:45
Same with us
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
56:06
Yes, changes in behavior, new friends etc, all important in finding student
Marja Unkuri-Chadhry
57:30
Yes sharing all of the mental health support at the university and emergency line where the student can call for help over the weekend.
Sarah Barr (Nebraska Wesleyan Univ)
59:46
Thank you!
Tiffany Gabbard--Cal State San Marcos
59:53
Thank you…so helpful. BUT I hope and pray this doesn’t happen for any of us!
Marja Unkuri-Chadhry
01:00:07
Thank you !
