I lived in third world countries for 17 years. There was a lot of bribery, corruption. Trump and friends is teaching this country how to get away with this behavior.

VoteSmart.org is a good source of information on candidates.

I give to individual candidates rather than organizations because there is no organization that believes exactly like I do. There are some exceptions. I give to the ACLU, NAACP, SPLC, and a few others.

Make a spreadsheet of candidates and record how much you donate to whom, so repeat solicitations can be ignored...

On the flip side, early money has a lot more leverage, especially for underfunded candidates... big name candidates get lots from all over the country.
