Not everything was lost in first generations after conversion. Lusitanus grew up with great Torah knowledge several generation after the lalte 15th century. Obviously the oral tradition was strong. We have not unicovered covert Jewish written texts, but maybe they existed. No research has been done in monasteries, but in places like that the monks had libarries and they were in contact with their families.
