The translator of this poem, Stephen Mitchell, is an old friend of ours. We were together at Havurat Shalom in Boston in the late 1960s.

Stephen Mitchell is brilliant. his translation of the Tao is fantastic and his notes are hilarious.

In Halakha (Jewish law), the notion of “M’chayev” also pertains to the religious obligation to fulfill a mitzvah.

e.g., one is “m’chayev” to fast on Yom Kippur, etc. etc.

One is “m’chayev” to the generation(s) that come before us.

Re akeida…..the question is, how much “poetic license” (no pun intended does the translator have to introduce a new interpretation …..unless the translator has access to the author/poet to discuss , etc

Here is one of Amichai's favorite themes, namely the chiyuv placed upon modern-day Jews by a very weighty (and often dismal) history, and by the inescapable references in every word of Hebrew. It binds whether one wants it to or not.
