43:49
Mmmmmmmmmm

44:00
Crying? Speechless?

44:32
I'm wondering if any of the panelists can speak to disability, the inherent ableism of the majority of farming (required to be able to work physically 60hours/week), and if there's any hope for a disabled person who wants to apprentice, with the reality being that i won't know how much work i can put in day day-to-day, and/or if you know anyone I can talk to about farming as a disabled person (are there farms that allow for flexible work, etc.)?

44:54
can you say that phrase again that youâre going to embroider? we missed it!

45:08
Its in the transcript!

45:26
^ ^ ^

45:43
I need to be able to be myself in a room full of 700 chickens,if I'm to have any hope of being able to be myself anywhere else in

45:48
yesss I resonate with that, @shoshana

45:51
Yes please to Freyglâs question! Think that ties so deeply into what Laâakea was saying about ways farming can be extracting from bodies and reductive of our bodies to labor

45:59
^^^

46:14
yes thank you so deeply freygl!

46:26
yes to freygyl's question please

46:53
shosh, i'm crying. <3

47:20
also probably distinct smells! to animal-beings

47:35
...FUCK I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT GOD'S SENSE OF SMELL BEFORE

47:35
Yes. The plants and soil too recognize us.

47:57
<3

49:49
wanna bump @freyglâs question!

49:55
lol thanks micha

53:20
so incredible Micha!

53:33
Shamati! I hear you!

53:34
Shamati shamati neshama!!!!

53:38
Shamati :)

53:38
shemati sweet holy human

54:17
i would love to talk about freyglâs question and how it is so inherently linked to capitalism. that if farmers are expected to sustain a farm through selling food, it means farmers are the ones who take the cut to keep food prices affordable, and how it is intertwined with everyone needing access to food and that farmers are the ones who have been tasked with making that possible by working ridiculous weeks or unsustainably. as trans folks we are also so often just fucking broke. how do we find ways to make sure we can still eat as farmers and also be truly inclusive?

54:45
@Tzomi ^^

54:48
Whewf, âafraid of instituting big changesâ

55:03
such good and important questions!!

55:15
Iâm also very interested in thought about ableism and farming, but I wonder if that could be fleshed out in a separate panel/discussion? Loving the trans focus and love flowing here and now!

55:48
amazing questions yall, we'll hopefully have some time for questions at the end of the panel so keep em coming!

56:19
honestly like farmers just need to be paid a basic income to make food to the best of our abilities, itâs the only reasonable way under capitalism i have been able to think of

56:20
such a beautiful question @tzomi. iâm also thinking about the potent and bright threads of connection between what it means to be a queer body farmer and a disabled body farmer. they are so connected and have so much to inform each other and iâm buzzing with the potential space and form that could be materialized through this exploration!

56:22
http://transtorah.org/PDFs/Blessing_for_Transitioning_Genders.pdf

57:08
i asked the question here because i am never not disabled and trans at the same time. there's not a space where my disability ends and my transness begins or vice versa

57:29
amen amen shoshana

57:31
^^^^^

58:24
Shamati, Freygl

59:12
@freygl same, right? so hard. on my own farm permaculture-styles of growing have been one big part of the solution. as well as telling all my customers that deliveries will be to their door whenever i am able in a certain date range because sometimes i canât make the same delivery day each week. permaculture-style growing like lasagna beds and perennials etc make it so much easier for my body to handle and are much more forgiving when needing to be âuntendedâ for a few days because of flare ups

01:00:33
there is a place near me called Open Sky that has a different approach to disability and farming, too. they might be interesting for you to look up

Participant Led Sessionhttps://forms.gle/qekEcLfnfLVWR5FY7As you may have noticed, on Sunday, January 31st, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM EST, in the first session block, we have space for participant-led sessions. We will then send out a poll to participants and our wider network to vote on sessions. The three topics with the most votes will be contacted to lead their session!Presenters will be notified by Thursday morning (01/28).https://forms.gle/qekEcLfnfLVWR5FY7

01:01:01
How do I contact Simcha / anyone else who makes klaf? (I'm a Kohenet student and going to start studying sofrut (ritual scribing) this year!

01:01:41
queerjewishfarmers@gmail.com Simcha is actually going to lead a session on klaf soon!

01:02:05
Also definitely interested in a conversation about ableism and farming! Itâs so rarely given space. Iâm wondering if this panel isnât necessarily the most informed to be addressing this question. Can we connect in some way so we can form a space to center disability? I would love to exchange emails to organize this. My partner and I are at Isaac.zerkle@gmail.com and brigitte.demelo@gmail.com

01:02:13
!!!!!!!!! thank you Jack!

01:03:21
and i think it totally weaves

01:03:27
Thank you Sam!

01:03:32
disability is queered ability in my experience, and i hear whats being said about it being involved and also deserving its own space

01:03:54
ooooo finnigan!! disabiltiy as queered ability

01:03:54
^^^^^

01:04:32
the subtle ableism of ppl suggesting the topic doesn't belong here is hurtful.

01:04:39
able-bodied and able-minded are temporary, fleeting states that few maintain their whole lives

01:05:01
some farming practices I can think of that could be done in a chair or without heavy lifting: mushroom cultivation, raised beds, greenhouse seedlings where the plants are on tables, guriella planting (scattering seeds), tending bushes and harvesting berries.

01:05:35
^^^^

01:06:13
curious what other options we can collectively come up with

01:06:17
!!!!!

01:06:40
so affirming just to hear this named

01:06:59
Grafting can be done while seated

01:07:12
YES

01:07:13
FMILY FARMING marketing drives me crazy.

01:07:19
We are our family.

01:07:22
Ha. I can't even spell it.

01:07:23
However can be harmful for those with chronic arm pain or joint pain

01:08:24
Iâm thinking too about what farming might look like if rest was at the center of it, instead of work

01:08:37
This ^^^^^

01:08:40
Cooperative farming supports accessibility. Not everyone has to do the same things on the farm. But assistive technology is lagging- especially around outdoor mobility.

01:08:42
yes

01:08:43
^^^^^^^ SHABBAT!

01:08:43
yesssssss. the shmita intensives this afternoon are gonna be Good

01:08:59
I have chronic pain and physical disabilities, and found that for me, working as an educational farmer allows so much more space for slowing down, not focusing as much on high levels of production/efficiency

01:09:05
weekdays are chol haâmoed shabbat

01:09:51
yes, K - intensively farmed areas dont leave room for chairs and other mobility aids

01:10:42

01:10:44
And the mobility aids that exist for outdoor access are too expensive.

01:10:46
I have to get the call early - revelling in so many threads touched on here- thanks so much for all the panelists!

01:11:44
love you sj

01:11:45
(chol haâmoed are the days in between chag for long festivals like sukkot and pesach - theyâre not just regular secular days, theyâre slightly elevated because theyâre sandwiched between holy days â what if we thought about weekdays as slightly elevated days between shabbats?) @leroy

01:12:10
and we might rig the vote towards a conversation about differing abilities

01:12:10
@neshama and cole, yes yes yes so much yes.

01:12:17
like rest is always centered

01:12:25
https://groundswellcenter.org/november-farming-for-justice-recording-unpacking-race-and-disability-injustices-on-the-land/

01:12:26
What website was that?

01:12:34
^link to the session La'a was talking about

01:12:45
The way everyone is articulating âproduction farmingâ vs other types is really illuminating. I install/maintain residential veggie gardens for people and have been afraid that farming would be âtoo intenseâ for me. another example of how topics related to disability are relevant for anybody/everybody :)

01:13:28
no shade shani but ive seen in my self-advocacy work a move away from âdifferent abilitiesâ towards explicitly âdisabilitiesâ :)

01:14:07
thanks for the heads up finnigan!

01:14:23
"it's hard out here, [and] we're thriving"

01:15:24
Where will this recorded content be shared?

01:16:17
A link to session recordings will be included at the end of the post-conference survey, which will hit your email inbox after the end of Day 2 of the conference (1/31)
