Hi, How do you determine how lightfast various dyes are? I have been told that the only dyes that are truly light fast are indigo, madder, and saffron. What do you think about this?

How “dangerous” is using aluminum acetate… or iron? I see all the “beware of your life - wear a mask, don’t breath, cover your body” messages (OK, I’m exaggerating a bit, but!)… it’s making me anxious! Help!

Re: using leaves as source of aluminum for mordants-- many traditional cultures burn the leaves and then use the ash in water-- which would be the aluminum component..

High lightfastness and performance dyes: indigo, weld, cochineal, madder, pomegranate. Proper mordanting provides better performance. Protein fibers will have better light and washfastness than cellulose fibers.
