Turnout is the most fun!

41:03
Did some texting a week or so ago and had no idea we were texting Republicans until I started getting responses. Was quite the experience.

42:46

45:39
talked to the actual opponent

46:15
haha, John - Did you persuade them?

46:25
That's so funny John.

47:14
He had a good laugh

48:47
Is it reasonable for us to ask text or phone bank leaders to be more transparent about our target audience or who we are talking to prior to a shift? Do they have access to that sort of info?

49:37
Great question Carla

49:41
In past experience, the organizers I’ve worked with tell me what sort of voters we’re targeting, so I think that’s reasonable

49:45
^^I second Carla’s question

50:50
I have found in smaller local phone banks that they have shared the information.

50:53
Carla - Santiago will probably answer this, but just from my experience it depends on the campaign -- sometimes people running the voter contact know those things but if it's a larger campaign they might not have super specific details for you. But I think definitely always ask!

52:24
How is purchase info acquired?

52:37
All of you have a 100 score. ; )

53:06
How *much* information is “publicly available” about voters? Where does this information live?

53:30
how do fundraising models compare to GOTV models?

53:39
Carla—when I was text banking last weekend, our Lead took us through who we were targeting. That list was for persuasion of voters who tend to be GOP or lean GOP. As you can imagine, it was a mixed bag, but I actually had a decent response of people voting for Biden and Dems this year, as well as a few that wanted to actually engage in discussion and felt like they moved from GOP to undecided. So it’s worth asking if they don’t tell you.

53:54
@Alex, it depends on the state laws.

54:09
Thank you, Santiago (and everyone)!

54:45
Is VBM info public and available to campaigns?

54:56
i.e. those who have signed up to VBM

57:19
@Alistair: I believe yes (may depend on state). I was texting a few weeks ago to follow up with people who requested VBM to ensure they return they application

57:24
Might be state specific but in Florida it is.

57:42
A lot of campaigns here do vote by mail ballot chasing after they go out.

59:16
How do you rank voters that may be persuadable if they have voted for the Republican presidential candidate in the past but then voted for Dems down ballot? Seems like that is a bit trickier?

59:22
I do not open mail.

59:50
Please dont

59:53
I do not answer the door when I’m not expecting anyone 😅

01:00:02
I opened my mail today hoping I got Biden stickers but no, just asking for donations

01:01:07
That makes me feel better to know that!

01:01:12
Why is it sometimes people say they’ve already been contacted? Is it because they weren’t updated properly before?

01:01:12
Can we get that as a standalone clip so we can play it on a loop before phone/text banks??

01:01:22
^^

01:01:22
That is HUGELY helpful to know!

01:01:24
Yes, Mallory!!!

01:01:31
Such a good reminder that every single call or text makes a difference! Yes, please clip that out!

01:01:45
Knowing that is such a helpful perspective for those of us in the phone banks.

01:02:00
<3 VAN

01:02:32
is this the magic spreadsheet!?!?!?!?!?

01:02:35
It's so hard when you come across nasty people over the phone or through text. You can't take it personally but it's good to know there is a positive result in some way

01:02:36
Rebecca, I notice a lot of times people think they’re being contacted by the same campaigns but then we come to find out they’re getting calls/texts from several different ones (local, general, etc.).

01:02:50
No Abigail. This is the holy grail of campaigns.

01:03:07
oh that’s just as good

01:03:48
Former SoS Election Data Analyst here. So excited to be on the other side!

01:06:13
When I worked as a volunteer data person for Obama 2012, they told us we talked to each person 5 times. Many people were not happy by the 5th call. Why do they do that?

01:06:48
Similar to Lisa’s question: When we phone and text bank for organizations in swing states, it’s really common to communicate with folks who have high contact fatigue. Do organizations plan around this? Is there a suggested way to effectively speak to these individuals.

01:07:58
Have you seen any evidence of changing efficacy of phone banking with the rise in spam calls? Does it seem like people are still answering the phone?

01:08:03
Are the data also used to evaluate effectiveness of volunteers? Do I get a personal volunteer score?? :)

01:08:57
What is the comparison of effectiveness of phone banking vs text banking?

01:09:14
^^ good question, Carl ^^

01:10:49
Can you track an individual voter if they move states (either frequently or infrequently?)

01:10:59
Jessica, IIRC, there’s data showing that people are actually answering their phones more this year! (Maybe because of pandemic related issues?)

01:12:09
Could you give an example of how a specific statistical model is used to determine something like a voter score? What types of models are used?

01:12:13
Along the lines of contact fatigue...have you or others studied the affect of the same volunteer following up with voters?

01:12:46
Cool, thanks for answering!

01:13:44
How would Arena be affected by potentially overturning Citizens United? Presumably Arena is funded by campaigns or super PACs and removing money from politics would sure influence the work Arena does, right?

01:15:19
Thanks!! Good stuff. Keep on fighting the good fight, y’all

01:15:22
Thank you, Santiago, for your time tonight!
