Our research shows that older people are WILLING to get online. As the panelists point out, cost and fear are relevant but we have found that broadband access is a key factor which we need to address nationally.

Should training and technology be included in the carers training courses
Mary Deery
01:52:24
How can volunteers help older people to access technology. Is there a role for volunteers and volunteering groups
Suzanne Smith NetwellCASALA/DKIT
01:53:33
Most healthcare assistant training courses would include some level of digital skill training, though mostly on how to use tech to complete the course. Knowing how to use tech and how to show older people how to use tech are somewhat different. We need some research on this to inform ongoing training for carers as the technology changes.

01:53:55
is there an onus on tech providers to leave no one behind when introducing services on line
Suzanne Smith NetwellCASALA/DKIT
01:54:01
Age Action kit and training do a great job on this.

01:58:09
We need to emphasise the social participation piece on supporting older people and not just look at older people under the social inclusion agenda
Suzanne Smith NetwellCASALA/DKIT
02:01:12
A significant and reasonable concern of older people is also around data security and privacy. Our efforts need to keep this into account.
Suzanne Smith NetwellCASALA/DKIT
02:03:46
End-users need to be confident that their data will not be used as a commodity by those collecting it.
Suzanne Smith NetwellCASALA/DKIT
02:06:37
We also need to remember that when we talk about 'older people' that is a diverse group. Just as diverse as all other people!

Therefore, what older people need from technology is diverse.
