Hi all. Thanks for doing this. Maybe Vickie or Aaron could address later the applicability of California's shield law to sources *not* physically in California? Many Bay Area reporters cover stories nationally in scope, so talk with sources who are located all over the country/the world.

49:30
For more on the Bryan Carmody ordeal and the motions to quash (and unseal) you can find all of those legal filings here: https://firstamendmentcoalition.org/the-carmody-story-in-depth/

55:07
Interesting to hear Aaron discuss the case law and balancing between a criminal defendant's right to information and the shield law. There is a case before the CA Supreme Court right now about whether/how to balance a criminal defendant's right to information held by Facebook and the Stored Communications Act, which regulates disclosure of that information. Wondering if Aaron or other panelists have comments on that.

Here is a terrific resource from U.S. Press Freedom Tracker. You can see the different types of subpoenas and legal orders https://pressfreedomtracker.us/subpoena/

01:01:07
Again, here’s how to find our Subpoena Defense Initiative for journalists who find themselves targeted by subpoena (or threat) or in Carmody’s case, warrant. We help connect journalists in need with qualified pro bono counsel. https://firstamendmentcoalition.org/subpoena-defense-initiative/

01:01:28
And for media lawyers, we host Shield Law CLEs in SF, DC and NYC.

For those who missed the introductions to our speakers, here are some bios for our speakers so far: Vickie is newsroom counsel at Reveal https://thesignalsnetwork.org, Aaron Field http://cofolaw.com/aaron-field/, Christine Peek https://www.mcmanislaw.com/people/lawyers/christine-peek.

01:31:06
You can follow Ryan’s work here. https://twitter.com/RMac18 and connect with Lauren here https://twitter.com/laurensmiley

01:37:34
Ryan: you were pretty transparent on Twitter about your back and forth with Elon. As you continued to cover the story, did you find at all that sharing the exchanges helped lead to additional sources who were perhaps more willing to talk to you?

01:40:39
Ryan, did you think much about the shield law and reporters privilege before you got hit with a subpoena?
