Hi all. Thanks for doing this. Maybe Vickie or Aaron could address later the applicability of California's shield law to sources *not* physically in California? Many Bay Area reporters cover stories nationally in scope, so talk with sources who are located all over the country/the world.

For more on the Bryan Carmody ordeal and the motions to quash (and unseal) you can find all of those legal filings here: https://firstamendmentcoalition.org/the-carmody-story-in-depth/

Interesting to hear Aaron discuss the case law and balancing between a criminal defendant's right to information and the shield law. There is a case before the CA Supreme Court right now about whether/how to balance a criminal defendant's right to information held by Facebook and the Stored Communications Act, which regulates disclosure of that information. Wondering if Aaron or other panelists have comments on that.

Ryan: you were pretty transparent on Twitter about your back and forth with Elon. As you continued to cover the story, did you find at all that sharing the exchanges helped lead to additional sources who were perhaps more willing to talk to you?
Ginny Laroe
01:40:39
Ryan, did you think much about the shield law and reporters privilege before you got hit with a subpoena?
