there was a recent movie based on the Green Book
Elsie St Leger
50:54
That movie was based on a book by the driver of a black musician. Not on the actual usage or users of the Green Book.
Elsie St Leger

My parents purchased a Green Book well into the 1970s when we took annual road trips.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” — Mark Twain
Matthew Ekstein

Sadly, today many LGBTQ+ people in many parts of the work still need to rely on guidebooks!

@Matthew Ekstein, I thought I thought about that as I read the book….

The Hollywood movie "Greenbook' is a whitewashed version of the story, centering white people. For a balanced, accurate film on the subject, check out Yoruba Richen's documentary. https://www.npr.org/2019/02/25/697667279/guide-to-freedom-documentary-chronicles-the-real-life-green-book

I came across quite a few houses, and even businesses, in upstate New York / VT that had large confederate flags over the summer. It's sad how these tactics of intimidation still remain

My African American grandparents traveled by trailer starting 1965 (for 35 years) and were not be fully confronted by racism - but my theory is that it was because they were traveling in their own vehicle/housing. https://www.everyonebuttwo.com/

01:13:30
MOBILITY = freedom. It is the key to everything. There is a reason why Saudi Arabia used to bar women from driving.
Elizabeth Kubany
01:13:58
And I say that even as I have willingly relinquished my mobility in order to curb the spread of COVID.
Ali Walker

My first time south of DC was in 1955 when I accompanied a friend from High School who loved steam trains. So we drove down the Blue Ridge Highway and chased a train to Roanoke, That was when I saw segregation for the first time. We went into the station to go to the bathroom. White bathroom. Upon entering it, the first person I saw was a black man, I was puzzled. If you were white and did not want to be with black people, why would you want a black person in your white bathroom. This is an informative talk.

Traveling in the dark was passed down from generation to generation. When we traveled, it was always in the wee hours of the morning, I thought it was because of traffic. I now know what my mother was not telling us. When I began to drive my children state to state, we too always traveled in the dark. It's time to break generational fears.
