Allen Ewing-Merrill
26:58
Seems to me a grant is a grant.
Chris Abbott
27:24
one would think…
Carter Friend
27:47
Sara, can you translate that into real $$s for HGW
Sara Ewing-Merrill
27:53
Kathy, you can call in on your phone for Audio and Mike
Sara Ewing-Merrill
27:56
microphon
Sara Ewing-Merrill
27:57
McClanahan. They live in Iowa. They were with us all summer, because they have a summer place in Raymond, and they’re retiring here in July and will be part of HGW full-time. Both UMC clergy.
Allen Ewing-Merrill
28:01
About $275,000 for the pension liability part
Carter Friend
30:59
I have a question
Ophelia Hu Kinney
31:42
Don, are you trying to say something? You’re on mute
Allen Ewing-Merrill
32:37
Yes, I believe we have determined that pastors of disaffiliating churches would still be allowed to continue to participate in the Wespath system.
Allen Ewing-Merrill
33:32
Wespath has been working for several years to relax its limitations on which clergy can participate. They rebranded from the General Board of Pension & Health Benefits to Wespath for the purpose of being able to do this.
Elizabeth Beane
33:51
Will Sara and Allen still qualify for their pensions?
Allen Ewing-Merrill
33:55
Yes
Ophelia Hu Kinney
34:19
Sara, I think Don is trying to speak too
Randy & Pete Cathcart
34:44
This is good information, but it sounds like very little is settled.
Ophelia Hu Kinney
35:02
^ agreed, Randy and Pete
Randy & Pete Cathcart
35:02
And we won't really have a choice in how it goes anyway.
Chris Abbott
35:34
Does anyone know how much of Chestnut streets back payments we would be responsible for?
Elizabeth Beane
36:21
What about the Hebrews grant?
Allen Ewing-Merrill
36:29
Chris, I think we would probably be responsible for unpaid “Ministerial Support” (pension and health insurance) not paid by Chestnut Street during several years of crisis before they sold the building. As I recall, that’s somewhere around $50,000ish.
Shantia & Jonathan Wright-Gray
36:29
jonathan has a question
Chris Abbott
36:35
I think its reasonable to expect a payment around 300k back to the conference, is that correct? Plus our back payments for mission shares?
Chris Abbott
37:01
So, we can estimate for us a payment of around 350k?
Ophelia Hu Kinney
37:02
But I think the abeyance only holds so long as the bishops agree to abide by it, Don
Allen Ewing-Merrill
37:11
Elizabeth, I think only Hebrews 11 payments over the past 3 years. By the time we make this decision, that could be $0. But I take issue with this, anyway, because I believe a grant is a grant, and this feels punitive.
Shelly Page
37:15
What is the overall timeline on disaffiliation?
Allen Ewing-Merrill
37:57
Jonathan and Shantia lost power and will try to be back if it comes back
Ophelia Hu Kinney
38:06
Oh no :(
Allen Ewing-Merrill
38:26
That sounds like a good estimate, Chris, if all of these proposals We is describing are approved at Annual Conference.
Elizabeth Beane
40:12
Does that mean if we owe a big chunk of money and can’t pay it all at once, that we can’t disaffiliate till it’s paid?
Don & Sue Rudalevige
40:15
can a church withdraw its disaffiliation right up to the last minute?
Elizabeth Beane
40:49
please answer my question, too.
Kathy Strand
41:49
If a church votes to disaffiliate, will its pastors be “protected” from judicial council action —or the newly restrictive measures that were put into place after Special GC and what went into effect January 1st this year?
Sara Ewing-Merrill
41:52
Question to answer : How are you feeling about the postponement of General Conference and what effects do you imagine that might have on our own process of discernment about disaffiliation at HopeGateWay?
Ophelia Hu Kinney
42:14
Sam Johnson has a Q
Erica
42:18
Can we get to Kathy's Question too
N, Shantia Wright-Gray
42:29
Jonathan has a question
Kathy Strand
45:16
Hi -you’ll need to read my question because my microphone isn’t working
Allen Ewing-Merrill
47:10
Our Bishop is retiring, and we will have a new Bishop in September. No one knows who that will be.
Erica
47:42
How will bishop assignments be made...
Don & Sue Rudalevige
48:03
he leaves IF Jurisdictional meets to elect new bishops.
Lindsay Roan
48:05
VERY AFRAID
Allen Ewing-Merrill
48:06
Jurisdictional Conference late summer, elects Bishop and assigns them to each Conference.
Kathy Strand
48:38
Can we quote you?
Elizabeth Beane
48:44
Keep We safe!!!!!
Erica

Question to answer : How are you feeling about the postponement of General Conference and what effects do you imagine that might have on our own process of discernment about disaffiliation at HopeGateWay?
Eileen Purdy
49:33
A plea to all: I'm greatly troubled by side chat questions and answers. I cannot multi-task like some of you clearly can.
Ophelia Hu Kinney
49:51
Evelyn
Allen Ewing-Merrill
49:57
Eileen, you can close the chat box and ignore it
Eileen Purdy

Lindsay
Chris Abbott
53:14
An unchanged discussion....
Allen Ewing-Merrill
54:17
The conversation started in 1972. Every General Conference since then, folks have taken a “Things will be better next General Conference” approach, and every General Conference things have gotten worse — including, and maybe especially, the Special Session in 2019.
Sara Bruce
55:32
I am feeling the same as Lindsay.
Chris Abbott
56:20
Completely agree with Allen here.
Ophelia Hu Kinney
56:57
Martin
Lindsay Roan
57:42
👍
Allen Ewing-Merrill
57:58
I’d like to be in the queue when there’s an opening
Eileen Purdy
59:26
Anyone venture when the decision about a new date will be made and when it's logical the date will be?
Ophelia Hu Kinney
01:00:02
Eileen, my best guess is that it could be similar to Baltimore-Washington’s schedule… they got postponed to the fall.
Ophelia Hu Kinney
01:01:06
As for General Conference, I’ve heard February 2021 or end of August to beginning of September 2021.
Eileen Purdy
01:01:37
I'd like it be answered out loud; not in a chat. Also wonder if others have other information. Probably not.
Chris Abbott
01:02:33
I’d like to hear Cliffs thoughts on what he feels about the changes that are possible at GC 2021
Sara Bruce
01:03:27
why can’t GC be virtual?
Evelyn Johnson Moore
01:03:27
We have control over our process and our decisions so that's what we need to focus on. Then we can be responsive not reactive to either Annual or General Conference decisions.
Kathy Strand
01:03:33
I think there is value in continuing our discernment to disaffiliate —and this encompasses affirming who we are but also takes an immediate tangible step to say what we stand for (which, if nothing changes denominationally, means we start negotiating the disaffiliation process of making that happen—which could take months /longer with all the delays in GC meetings etc. I think there is value to making disaffiliation “REAL” to the “powers that be” and also may provide us and our fellow congregations who are currently discerning more of a voice in what that process eventually looks like. —again, sorry for the microphone issue -hope the above makes sense!!
Lindsay Roan
01:03:59
because everyone would sleep through it
Ophelia Hu Kinney
01:04:03
LOL
Elizabeth Beane
01:04:24
I would like to hear from Cliff also
Ophelia Hu Kinney
01:07:13
I’d like to say something re whether to carry on with our process
Allen Ewing-Merrill
01:08:03
I really appreciate Evelyn’s words here: “We have control over our process and our decisions so that's what we need to focus on. Then we can be responsive not reactive to either Annual or General Conference decisions.”
Allen Ewing-Merrill
