Hot IDEA news

The Federal TRIO Programs are federal outreach and student services programs in the United States designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. They are administered, funded, and implemented by the United States Department of Education

If you ever have specific scholarship questions email me or email scholarships@isep.org

Della Burke and I were just talking about reaching out to her first time travelers from ITESO in Guadalajara, Mexico. She actually gets them together to go through Visa materials because they often dont know what specific terms mean.

43:37
*Just to clarify, most ISEP summer programs offer the option for 6 U.S. credits, there are a few exceptions, but they are low cost options!

46:32
I haven't personally used this, but there's an App students can use for flights that will notify their family of their flight status. It's called App in the Air. https://www.appintheair.mobi/

49:54
Thank you! These resources are very help.

50:30
So impressed at all the angles ISEP considers in serving our students. Thank you for the resources and all the care!

51:34
👍

53:19
What are you doing to them?!?!

53:32
I would love to hear from universities who collect statistics on 1st gen Students - how do you collect the data? If we ask on the application form, I am worried that People will think this will effect the decision… I would love to start gathering this data at our School.

53:44
We offer optional info sessions (in addition to our regular pre-departure orientation sessions) that is geared towards first-time travelers that talks about airport basics, travel docs, etc. We actually have one session tonight so this has been really helpful to prepare for that.

54:14
Wow, that's still an incredible number of students.

54:45
Most of our students are first generation and traveling for the first time.

55:02
I do something similar to Sarah and will host a Travel 101 workshop for first time travelers during International Education Week

55:58
It is done through our Admissions office so I am not sure. It is "self-reported" by students.

56:37
GDPR means they have to opt in, so we make sure they check it's okay.

57:17
@TiffanyGabbard I really like that: a Travel 101 workshop. That would definitely help to set their minds at ease at the airport and certainly, pre-departure. Having a list of things to have on board with you: any medications, making copies of flight itineraries for family back home, copies of passports, etc.

57:38
Tiffany, what's the content of that 101 workshop?

58:26
We collect first-Gen and first-time-traveler data in two places - one in our Pre-Advising form before a student meets with us (it’s a multiple-selection list with “I identify as…” and then a whole list of options). It’s optional to complete. We also have a mandatory “Student Information Sheet” in each application through our office, which has a disclaimer that it is just for informational purposes not for selection criteria. It’s all self-reported though in those two spots. We pull in some info from the university student information system but first-time-travel certainly isn’t listed.

58:38
@TiffanyGabbard, that could be a great thing to post about on your social media as well.

59:00
Thanks, Shelby!

59:00
We use to do a 1st time traveler session as an option for students and I think we should bring it back! Thanks for the reminder ISEP!

01:00:05
@Tiffany, I think that just giving new students access to you and letting them know you're there is a great step 1 for relationship building too.

01:01:23
If you're at a really small campus and haven't had a first time traveler in a while, let me know! We have alumni mentors who were first time travelers who love to give back to other ISEP students.

01:02:19
@Michael…if you have any video vignettes that would be short to include, that would be AWESOME…we are seriously lacking in a returnee base!

01:02:58
I will put it on the marketing list Tiffany, we do have some video content but are building up new IDEA-focused stuff.

01:06:35
Yes!!! I saw that as well! It was interviews with parents and their student they supported to go abroad.

01:06:51
The visa process is daunting even to students who have traveled before! The Spain and Italy webinars are helpful, though. Can you please also do one for Belgium?

01:07:41
I second the visa process comment! ^ These webinars are hugely helpful for all students but especially first-Gen and first-time travelers.

01:09:23
Also if we could bring back the language and culture program sheets…like if you have so many semesters you can go here….

01:10:34
A visual/flow-chart with the process from start to finish (an overview, but with more detail than just applying, being placed, and arriving) would be a great asset to help a student understand what’s ahead to begin with.

01:11:01
Thank you Bailey & ISEP!! This has been great! I need to run to another meeting. Thanks!!!

01:11:16
Thanks for coming Kristine!

01:12:24
I also do webinars on advising students on applying for our scholarships, which may be particularly helpful for non-US students..

01:12:39
Thank you!

01:12:56
Thank you!

01:13:06
Thank you Bailey and Amira

01:13:08
Thank you! This was wonderful!
