30,000 D voters voted for George Bush. Minus 1,000 leaves 29,000 D votes that defeated Al Gore. That doesn't include D voters who stayed home and did not vote.Gore lost quite simply.

ANother thing to keep in mind on Florida in 2000, and this may be a tangent, but the US stopped the recount for which the FL State Supreme Court ordered (how to conduct elections are a "states right") handing the election to Bush. A subsequent recount by the NYTimes showed Gore actually won. But the corrupt Supreme Court is another story
