At many small school sites (mine included, Sutro ES) rooms and spaces that serve for students in Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention are planned to be utilized for isolation, overflow, and storage, leaving no place for service providers to see this students. I have been told that no current space exists for: SLPs, RSP, Psych, Social Worker, Paras, ARTIF, and Lit Coach to see students. Our administrator cannot build a new building herself and zero space is available. Mine is not the only site like this - what is SFUSD SPED leadership’s plan to address this? In the future, how will SFUSD SPED leadership make sure that non-classroom staff, specifically SPED staff, are not treated as second class teacher’s whose rooms, times, and spaces, are not respected?

Parents need to know that not all IEP minutes will be able to be met because it is not possible for teachers to meet in-person minutes and distance learning minutes.

Vanessa Thomas
01:27:57
Great question. Minutes are already not being met during remote learning.
Rebecca Fedorko
01:28:28
Some sites and administrators don’t necessarily have significant experience in special educators - we have a lot of new educators. Continually putting the onus on sites to figure out their own “puzzle” is incredibly challenging for new, unsupported, and inexperienced teachers.
Megan Caluza
01:28:30
And when is there time for the IEP meetings?
Joshua Jagerman
01:28:56
If a family signed an emergency learning plan, is the goal for those minutes to be met or the minutes in the IEP (if there is a discrepancy in the number of minutes)?
Rebecca Fedorko
01:29:07
We need more solutions for SPED across the district - it’s really challenging to constantly hear that there’s little support because each site is it’s own puzzle.

Follow-up to my Behavioral Question: The school sights cannot increase staffing for Paras and Behavior help, for the last 6 weeks. Under normal circumstances, the IEP often falls short for behavior, social workers/Councilors often fill those holes. Often behavior issues are a team-effort. I’m having a hard time seeing this staffing solution.
