In the 1980's we brought 70,000 L.A. City School students to State Parks in the Santa Monica Mountains for interpretive programs. What if we had given 1 park brochure to every student who came out? Then their parents would have had directions and access to bring their kids back to State Parks. It would have gone a long way toward increasing use of State Parks by underserved communities. Our program was through the Santa Monica Mountain Resource Conservation District. I am a former State Park Ranger from Topanga SP.

Very true to invest in facilities! Take a look at Arizona State Parks. It has all those things, including good campgrounds, that Bob Doyle is talking about. As full time RVer's for the past 4 years, Arizona has the best equipped and most enjoyable and convenient to trails, visitor centers, and programs.

Los Angeles Audubon is working with schools and communities on creating schoolyard habitats, and our high school student interns help to maintain the schoolyard habitats and serve as mentors. Nature is a great teaching tool and outdoor learning is so important.
