Question for Mark: Do you think there is awareness in schools of the financial implications for caterers? What more could be done to explain this

Hi Mark, it's really interesting to hear about what ISS have been doing to support some of their schools during C-19. Are you able to give us a sense of the % of ISS schools across the country you were continuing to support with a lunch offer of some sort to families not on school premises vs how many schools didn't have parcels/catering service and would have been using the FSM voucher scheme etc

Mark - just wondering how you think secondary school food might change in terms of the menu. Will you be aiming for a pared down menu? Could this offer health benefits?

Have you put in place a risk assessment for your staff and working with those who are classed as high risk when coming back into the work place.? I am aware of a template via NHS which could help with this

Mark, if we could secure government commitment to support children on FSM during the summer holidays, would you be in a position to continue the work on the hampers.? and ... what proportion of your schools are currently using these rather than the vouchers?

Hi Kate. Where school cooks cant social distance in a kitchen this may be a PPE requirement to enable a safe operation. It will be decided following a risk assessment based on each kitchen. Hope that helps

Hi Anna, two Qs. Secondary school offers will be re-imagined post Covid, so there is an opportunity here to make healthier as long as it remains relevant and interesting for teens.

@mark How do you expect parents will respond to the expectation of no more packed lunches, considering the consequent cost they would incur?

Anna, summer holiday feeding can be done by caterers. It depends on whether funding is available for staffing in addition to the food cost. The benefits are clear and staff will want to help. If reliant on volunteers, then we would need lots of goodwill.

Hi Fatma,- it will be difficult to enforce, so lots of good comms with parents will be needed as they will need confidence that we can feed their cherished well and safely.

Claire - given your concerns about food insecurity, do you have any plans to extend FSM provision through the summer holidays. Do you have resource to do this if central government doesn't commit to it?

HI Claire - do you have any data on the numbers of children who are food insecure and not elgible for FSM? we're interested in building an evidence case on this problem as part of our Childrens Right to Food campaign

Do you think there is a possibility of utilising best practice and teams from organisations like Chefs in Schools to set up distribution hubs in more able schools ?

Amazing work around school lunches. Magic Breakfast support schools providing breakfast for children at risk of hunger so they start the day ready to learn. Is this a priority in schools too? If so, how are you organising this?

Has the DfE given any indication as to when the national voucher scheme will end, so that schools can start to prepare parents for this eventuality?

What is the duration of the intakes , I consider, has to recover much more time , if we look for a good feed. It is not only nutrients. Society is changing after this emrgency. Ir is a very important oportunity meal time to learn many things in this strugling times

Hi, sorry, not totally related to what speakers have been discussing, but perhaps could be asked at the end? In Camden around 50% of parent's have indicated that they will not be sending their Reception, Yr1 & Yr6 children back to school from 1st June. I've become aware that any FSM children who do not come back to school from these year groups will not be eligible for the Government vouchers because they have chosen to stay home (understandably!), rather than "have" to stay home, as per the Government's guidance. Could pressure be put on Government to continue to provide vouchers for these vulnerable children?

Huge shout out to Magic Breakfast for going the extra mile to get food to our families.

QUESTION: How are practices changing in the kitchen around the cleansing of packaging, given that food will be served cold and therefore some will be uncooked in the first week.

Our phone calls to parents tell us that only 30% would like their children to return to school after the half-term break, so we will have to offer both on-site and off-site food provision for some time yet.

Good to see hygiene/safety issues addressed.

We don’t know yet if FSM will be across the board initially but if there is payment required especially in secondary school is there any guidance on how to do this? We use PINs at till points which will not be possible after returning

The voucher system is leaving many families stranded as the actual administration is broken... who is picking up on this?

@Jo Smith - this is what I also initially thought. However, following discussion with head of FSM here, it was highlighted that the wording of the Government guidance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance/covid-19-free-school-meals-guidance-for-schools) is very vague but as they use the wording "Support for pupils who have to stay at home", this insinuates that it only applies to children who cannot attend school, not children choosing to not attend?
