Does that mean that in NYC even if they didn’t have FCV they would have had the same delay in reporting?

RCV
David Bangs
43:09
Media usually calls elections soon after the election, based on raw data. Do they have access to the data so far do the can run it through the open source tabulator? It seems media will learn to run the tabulator?
Barbara Klein
45:35
They did release some raw data on the first round. Can't be final raw data even for 1st round however if all ballots not yet in.
David Bangs
45:43
States never announce winners until all the ballots are in, media does. But media is not experienced yet with RCV analysis.

Some voters think both parties are bought and the candidates are recruited by the crooked parties. Rank choice invites more candidates to run from the citizenry.
David Bangs
01:05:53
From 538 blog: “However, we aren’t expected to know the official winner until the week of July 12. That’s partly due to the city’s adoption of ranked-choice voting for municipal elections, but mostly it’s because New York takes a long time to count absentee ballots. (Absentee results won’t even begin to be released until July 6.)”The RCV tabulation is instant, but without fuller data you can’t know which candidates will be eliminated in what order. Preliminary results of all rankings are less predictable than just who got the most first choice votes.
Alex Koplin
01:06:14
can't you have a runoff with RCV?

Kit Muehlman
01:07:29
Alex, in most cases the primary and general election are combined in one RCV election. However, there’s a provision in the Washington Local Options bill to have a “winnowing primary”. If there
Kit Muehlman
01:08:06
If there’s a large field of candidates, there can be a winnowing primary, and the top five go on to the general election , another RCV election.
Rich Stevenson
01:13:00
`Absolutely love then local option option.
Rich Stevenson
01:14:50
Can this way help to eliminate career incumbent? I hope.
Rich Stevenson
01:16:26
LOL. Not perfect!!!
Kit Muehlman
01:16:30
Rich, if the career incumbent doesn’t have a majority support, and he/she’s counting on a loyal, but small, base, RCV would make an opening for a new candidate.
Dwight Rousu
01:17:40
RCV removes the inhibition of neophyte candidates running as part of learning how to run for office for fear of being a spoiler.
Rich Stevenson
01:17:41
Help To Eliminate "wingnut" winners and incumbents??
Yvonne Brandon
01:18:15
In that case, why would two candidates showcase their campaigns together?
Kit Muehlman
01:18:35
Rich, if the wing nuts have majority support, then RCV won’t help you. No results guaranteed, except more voters get what they want.
Rich Stevenson
01:19:43
Super majority of voters are not "Wingnuts." So could not get a RCV majority????
Yvonne Brandon
01:19:44
...and what happens when no candidate gets 50%?
Dwight Rousu
01:20:49
RCV might attract more green and democratic socialist candidates and their supporters to the races and to voting. Increasing democratic participation.
Rich Stevenson
01:23:03
Is algorythim the correct concept for the means to do RVC???
Barbara Klein

Dwight Rousu
01:23:38
Washington state senate did not call the rank choice bill to the floor, reportedly because some senators were not clear on what it was. How well has RCV education reached state senators?
christy bear
01:24:47
Our WA SOS does’t like RCV- she has said it would likely confuse voters, and lead to lower voter turnout
Yvonne Brandon
01:25:42
McConnell attacked the redistricting provision in S1 as a Federal Govt. takeover of State's Rights. Reminder: States Rights was code for allowing States to keep their slave economy.
Steph Houghton
01:25:48
I think the data from NYC is in the process of proving her wrong on that particular point - turnout is higher this year than it has been in over a decade.
Benjamin Chapman
01:25:51
She has said that! I’m not really sure why she says it would lead to lower voter turnout, since all evidence suggests that in other places it’s implemented it has increased turnout. In fact, NYC had the highest turnout ever in this recent election!
christy bear
01:28:55
I think our SOS says it because she doesn’t think it will be a good thing for Republicans if more voters are voting in WA.

Tim White
01:34:31
Yes, David. But the Top Two is a "sifting" primary, not a nominating primary. Parties are free to nominate any candidate, but that nomination does not appear on the ballot line, which will print the name of any party provided by the candidate, even without party permission. Correct?
Chris Mason - Chehalis - Mason County - FairVote WA
01:35:01
Yes Tim.
JJ L.
01:35:13
Sharon, I think it's absolutely evidential that the Republican Party of today does NOT want to live in a democracy....there should be no surprise to state such a thing at this late date in the process. Thanks for the honesty.

01:36:36
Does this help to eliminate the "money primary"??? Amy McGrath had $70 million raised in 2018 for 2020 D Primary. D party selected her to defeat Mitch McConnell. She was not the best candidate in 2020. D's could only choose Amy on the General.
Sharon Abreu
01:36:37
JJ - I agree. At the same time, I believe that as the Democratic Party has moved farther to the right, it has pushed the Republican Party farther to the right and pretty close to the edge of a major cliff.
Norm Conrad
01:37:21
Is King County proposal for single or multiple member elections?
Ryan Jones
01:37:39
I would say that parties have the ability to “endorse” candidates. It’s also worth mentioning that most local elections in WA are of the non-partisan variety, and don’t have the “prefers ___ party” designation that partisan races in WA have. There is actually quite a history involving court battles with this type of self-declared party designation when WA adopted top-two elections. The major parties felt that it violated their freedom of association, but the courts did not agree.
Norm Conrad

Tim White
01:40:03
Here in central WA, where our Repub congressman Dan Newhouse is in inner-party fight for being a conservative Repub who voted for impeachment, RCV will become an attractive steam valve to Republicans in this knockdown dragout for control of the GOP.
