For those taking community college- how do you deal with classes and classmates that are the same model as K-12 public schools, in terms of how they are taught and how (most) students approach the learning (e.g. exam focused, marks)?
Barry Chiate
06:54:10
What do you think about courageous students like Great Thunborg or MALALA who won the Nobel Peace Prize at 15 for her belief in education for all. Would any of you like to be the next Greta - Malala? Why or why not?
Stephanie Sewell
06:55:35
I can attest to the importance of this teen/advisor relationship. (Speaking as a parent and board member of a LL centre which didn't do this consistently, and didn't survive!)
Greg Keller

Major psychologists have said that by the age of 5 to 6 the basic character of a human being has been shaped for a lifetime.
Greg Keller
07:04:32
@Sophia - in case it helps in the future, when you are dialed in you still mute and unmute using the button on your computer (assuming you used the participant code it will connect the video and audio)
Kathyann
07:04:33
Do you relate to your teachers as a future generation or a current generation?
Sofia j. (Alcove)

Barry, a lady here in Ottawa repeats a quote from somewhere I don’t remember: “Show me a boy of seven, and I will show you the man.”

Take a look at my fun video on Youtube where 5 year olds talk about life with more understanding than many adults. Put the title NO ADULTS LEFT BEHIND into the title bar. They put the basics of life together better than any politician on TV.

One of the advantages of the digital age is that it is cheaper and more efficient to move bits than to move people. But bits don’t carry everything that your can get face to face.

Could choice be an important difference?

There is a wonderful presentation at 4PM with SCOTT BOLTMAN about the founder of kinder garden - FROEBEL - who set the standard for child based education 200 years ago. Kinder-garden was originally about a magical garden where children would be free to play and discover things for themselves.
Stephanie Sewell
07:10:16
Also, in college, you don't have to ask permission to use the washroom!
Greg Keller
07:10:19
Format mattered for me, 2.5 hours vs 45 minutes meant I could learn the whole idea with context in one session.
Ken Danford (North Star)
07:10:41
yes, stephanie! bathroom is an issue!
Heather MacTaggart
07:10:55
You know it Derry! Choice is THE difference! That's why all kids have the right to be a Free Learner, if they choose to. https://www.unschoolingschool.com/free-learner.html

A great resource for the future of education is a book like PETER SENGE called SCHOOLS THAT LEARN. His main idea is that schools should be turned into community centers where people of all ages could meet and learn from each other. Schools are available for free on the weekends. Great stuff

A suggestion: In response to your questions about the barriers to leaving school (for parents and youth) AND you request for a prediction about whether their will be a significant increase in interest in home schooling resource centers in the Fall, I think that we must first overcome the power of the school paradigm—the assumption that education exists only in schools, so no schooling = under-educated people. My suggestion to help break out of this paradigm is a national publicity campaign—articles in local newspapers everywhere, and/or ads for local centers, to be funded by a fund created by AERO, or the Alliance for Self-directed Education, or a new group, with the money coming from donations by homeschoolers everywhere (including AERO and ASDE members).
