I would love to hold space to talk about the word resilient it has a negative connotation in many Black communities because we should not have to be resilient in response to racism and oppression. Often that word is used to celebrate us and at the same time deny communities the resources they need. I know that was not the intent here, but it is important to raise in our use of language

33:14
Powerful point, Amanda

33:43
Thank you, Amanda, for providing this brave reminder.

35:07
@Sonia Quinonez, congratulations on your new appointment as a board member of NVHF.

36:03
Thrilled to be able to support the important work NVHF is doing and the conversations sparked!

36:17
Great point, Dr. Woolf. Ownership is key to closing the racial wealth gap.

51:18
VA House of Delegates passed a package of voter suppression bills just yesterday, including restrictions on absentee voting and stricter photo ID requirements. Hopefully, they won't survive the Senate. But good point that this effort is alive and well in VA today...

I haven't read this in full yet, but Health Affairs just published an article about the historical policies and events that led to the health disparities in DC that may be of interest to this group: https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/epdf/10.1377/hlthaff.2021.01805

56:58
Thanks for sharing Sarah!

58:57
Yes-- thank you for noting that Amanda. Resilience can often invoke a deference to racialized capitalism.

59:02
What word is suggested ?

59:22
Is it an issue of the word itself or the concept? I imagine both

59:54
great point

01:00:01
It's a similar point with immigrant communities - resilience.

01:00:02
Have FORCED people to be resilient for survival and liberation

01:00:08
Liberation is joy and pleasure; not gritting one's jaw.

01:00:21
Well said, Gretchen

01:01:13
Thank you, Gretchen

01:03:43
Is reparations mentioned in the report?

Imminent domain will likely be used to displace families along coastal lands in the South.

The Federal Highway Administration has historically purposefully used infrastructure projects to destroy Black neighborhoods.

@sarah, thank you for the great article share re health equity. I wondered if Dr. Woolf looked at the health lens in his research of NoVA.

01:06:49
Baltimore being again another clear example with infrastructure racism and its highways, redlining etc.

Thank you Pat for your leadership on this incredible report. Many in NoVA want to talk about equity in broad terms and not focus on the racialized history of this community and this is so helpful in grounding those conversations.

01:09:34
Thank you so much WRAG, Ruth, panelists and all attendees. Wonderful to be in community with you all.
