Don't worry about sounding privileged. Your pain is real.
theCoderSchool North Shore
11:49:47
Homophobia sucks =(
theCoderSchool North Shore
11:50:19
Oh geez, suicidal ideation too! You and your friends have been through so much! =(
Sylvie
11:51:22
That is a LOT, Crystal! I’m so grateful for you sharing your story.
Samantha Kifer

The Prevention of Community. You're not allowed to discuss your own issues with your own prior teacher. =(

Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
11:52:21
Wow! I am so impressed with the young people we've seen this weekend. Crystal - you are an amazing young woman with an incredible story to share.
Erin
11:54:03
In my 8 hours/week counselling, I have more than 50 students assigned to me. There are not enough minutes in the work week!
Wendy Raver (She/Her)
11:54:09
So heartbreaking -- thank you for sharing
Monica Kmetz Cochran
11:55:06
thanks so much for sharing Crystal <3
theCoderSchool North Shore
11:58:12
I can speak to the experience of school counselors being unhelpful. =(
Roger Horton
11:58:29
Grateful for your honesty and your insights.
Samantha Kifer
11:58:55
So sad to hear, as a school counselor; how invalidating of your experience
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:00:27
It's no one's fault, but it was still a relational betrayal. You should be able to count on your teachers.
theCoderSchool North Shore
12:03:20
It's sad that you have to shoulder this burden.
Richard Fransham
12:03:27
Unfortunately, teachers are also victims of an inappropriate system. They too are trying to survive.
theCoderSchool North Shore
12:03:44
True, but at least teachers have the option to quit.
Samantha Kifer
12:03:58
I FEEL you, so easy to fall into helplessness. I keep trying to focus on what I can do in my own sphere of influence
Samantha Kifer
12:04:48
DOOMERS LOL so sad but so true
Michael Maser
12:04:56
It is an emergency situation unfolding ... reaching back in time of course, but sustaining momentum with increasing stress, especially registering on younger people and children.
Kimberly "Ki"
12:05:18
Thank you for sharing you personal story. And, thanks for trying to put some of the problems of public school in perspective. I went to a very big, anonymous, competitive, public school and I really think it hurt me. As an adult, I tried to steer it the right way a bit, and I think I made a small dent. But, I do wish I could help my old community more. You are very ambitious and brave.
Sylvie
12:06:27
Your actions are so impactful! Like you said: you and your friends are here with us today, despite going through so much adversity, and your courage is saving lives.
Samantha Kifer
12:06:41
Yes, we HAVE to believe we can make a difference
Roger Horton
12:06:46
Yes to revolutionary optimism! Our moment calls for it more than ever. If young people care there is real reason for optimism.
theCoderSchool North Shore
12:07:26
Crystal, is there any movement in the schools to make schoolwork itself less stressful? Fewer hours, less homework, more freedom etc..
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:07:55
Thank you Crystal! This was amazing!
Monica Kmetz Cochran
12:08:13
Your story is so important to share Crystal!
Roger Horton
12:08:26
Thank you so much Crystal, I agree with Sylvie that your courage is saving lives.
Elmarie Hyman
12:08:50
Thank you Crystal!! Such important work!!!
Nora Gibbons (she/her)
12:09:38
So true, thank you so much for your story and for reminding everyone how essential revolutionary optimism is! As Mariame Kaba says, “Hope is a discipline"
Michael Maser
12:12:08
@ Crystal: how can we - and especially the ‘elders’ in this group - support you??
Sylvie
12:12:30
+1 Michael's question
Sylvie
12:15:35
Walk the talk!
Samantha Kifer
12:15:55
Oh GOD I can totally relate to that!! Just giving lip service to mental health
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:16:18
We cause the mental health problems and then window dress them.

@ Amanda -- what a punishing system. And I know that to be the case.
Samantha Kifer
12:18:43
FACTS
Dileepa Manawadu
12:19:06
Brutal truth
Michael Maser
12:19:20
To rephrase my recent Q: how might we (the elders) ‘triage’ this system for young people in need?
Michael Maser
12:19:35
or, rather, the situation, not the system.
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:20:10
There is SO MUCH talk about mental health. But realistically, we don't care about the deeper mental health of either staff or students. We just want to offer solutions like teaching kids square breathing and giving fidget toys. No one is alking about making school more manageable for children and adults so that we don't need those useless interventions.
Samantha Kifer
12:20:26
FACTS Amanda
Samantha Kifer
12:20:46
And of course, the broader systemic issues of poverty
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:22:11
Poverty. Race. Gender. Neurodivergence. All related.
Michael Maser
12:23:17
@Samantha: not sure what you're referencing in your exclamation of ‘FACTS’. If you are disputing this, I subscribe to two journals that are regularly posting research studies validating what Crystal is referencing for HS, for higher ed students. Journal of Higher Education and Chronicle of Higher Education. This isn't ‘heresay’.
Samantha Kifer
12:23:51
lol no Michael, FACTS is lingo I picked up from the kids I"ve worked with to state intense agreement with what someone is saying
Sylvie
12:23:53
I read it as agreement @michael
Amanda MacKenzie (she/her)
12:23:55
I heard it as agreement.
theCoderSchool North Shore
12:24:08
I heard it as agreement
Michael Maser
12:24:45
Got it, Samantha! Further: systemic anxiety and resultant issues in higher ed (undergrad) is spiking ... no Q about it.
Samantha Kifer
12:25:33
hence it being FACTs! Undisputed
Samantha Kifer
12:27:42
love the lingo! Based! That's a new one to me!
Michael Maser
12:27:57

Dileepa Manawadu
