Why do you think AOC was critized for claiming Black as part of her identity?
Amanda Jasso
51:27
Unfortunately, the U.S. chooses for you. We are racialized in the U.S. whether we want to choose or not.
Joshua Robinson
51:28
We definitely have a great deal of internalized racial inferiority in the Black & Brown community we are working through. One step at a time.
Shelly Cruz YHPAA President

I'm from New Orleans. When I was growing up most folks I met were from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, on Central America. So they were mostly mulatto as opposed to mestizo. But is this something that divides us?
Sergio N
01:04:24
I think these conversations often come off as a challange to people, or as if we're calling someone out. I recently started seeing people talk about how much care and love it takes to have these types of conversations with people. No one has to inform/educate you, but when they take the time to do it's most likely because they want to see you improve. Maria Brown-Spence definitley showed that. Thank you for sharing your story.

I didn’t know any BIPOC history until I studied Ethnic Studies at UT - that’s way too late. Our kids should see themselves in their textbooks/education from the very start.

the Dirty Girls Social Club is a fictional book by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez that addresses the journey of 4 Latina women from the perspective of colorism, Spanish language speaking and priviledge.

Yes, I've experienced that negativity in not knowing Spanish . . . Having a speech impediment growing up, even speaking English wasn't an option for me for years, let alone a second language.Thank you for addressing this thoughtful question.
Shelly Cruz YHPAA President
01:35:43
I have been judged for not being Latina enough and even labeled a "coconut" just because I do no speak Spanish.
Amanda Jasso
01:35:58
100% Luz. Most of my family speaks fluent Spanish but I wasn't taught as a child because my dad thought I would be more "successful" if I was a native English speaker.
RM Harrison
01:36:10

When we have to check the box, which should Latinos check? I know right now people are checking white instead of Native American. Afro Latin@s? Especially since Latin@ has been racialized. Any thoughts?
