Yitzhak navon modernized the story. and took it to the different gates of Jerusalem clamoring to have the israeli soldiers enter through their gate.

"Snow in Jerusalem" by Deborah da Costa is a nice children's story about a friendship between Arab and Jewish boy. They are equals, but still, it is a unique relationship.
Much literature of the early years of the State of Israel was considered "recruited" literature with a national narrative. This may be why these stories are not popular now.

In Holon, “the city of children” there is a story garden with many children’s stories depicted with wonderful sculptures. Room for Rent is one of them. It is delightful.
