I love this emphasis on measurement and measurability. It's a really positive shift away from the old platitudes that tourism (pre-COVID) tended to use regularly for green-washing.

55:44
Question: Do we know to what extent the financial markets incentivise ESG and SDG performance improvement ie better performance across SDGs = better cost of capital, interest charges etc etc ?

Daniella Sachs
58:46
So awesome to seeing the tourism community collaborate like this!!
Camilo Montoya-Guevara
59:10
Completely agree, often times tourism growth is seen as the “end” and with inherent possibility without actually thinking of the goals and consequences of tourism development!
Donna Zeigfinger
59:21
yes
Sheila Faalasli
59:22
yes!
Jonathan Tourtellot

Great job, Jeremy!

Agree we need to avoid “local washing” and love that new expression!
Sandra Neiva Fernandes
01:01:58
Totally agree with your presentation Jeremy!
Alison Stancliffe
01:05:30
It was great to hear Jeremy say so coherently what Tourism Concern UK and its global partners were saying twenty five years ago, when there was a great explosion of interest in how to make tourism sustainble. Those of us involved then found deaf ears everywhere. Here's to open ears now for all your endeavours - and don't forget the huge legacy of tourism research that could help you on your way, even in the context of the post covid 2020s.
Stroma Cole
01:06:17
Very well said Alison!

Leena Grönroos
01:15:02
Hello all! I am Leena Grönroos, very pleased to join this group. Today's topic is a most current issue also here in Finland. 01:15:18
Great examples of certification, Albert
Rebecca Armstrong

Really great practical insight - thank you Albert!
Sandra Neiva Fernandes
01:16:47
Definitely assessment, monitoring and transparent certification are essential Albert!
Benjamin Carey
01:21:23
Great emphasis on investment. Unless tourism can attract responsible investors, sustainable tourism is never going to become the driver of sustainable development that it needs to be.
Mayte Redondo
01:21:28
Colombia is really a model to follow in terms of infraestructure, Good practise and conservation

01:24:10
Ironically I have to leave the webinar for a destination dashboard discussion for our region! Sorry to miss the other presenters. Thank you for the inspiration this earth day!!

01:24:32
Colombia is amazing! So wonderful to see that the country is focusing on destination stewardship, from industry to local communities AND travelers!
Csenge Adriany
01:24:49
You can watch the rest of the webinar later, we will share the link!
Jonathan Tourtellot
01:25:27
Something that Albert wisely alluded to needs more attention from all of us: the tendency of mass tourism to globalise destination identity and nudge aside local crafts, foods, music, and other facets of destination character. This, too, is a sustainability issue.
Jamie Sweeting
01:26:55
The World needs more leaders like Julian!!
Helen Marano
01:27:49
Oh wow, I totally support your perspective.....they have hit ALL of the dynamics, especially for pushing through the legislation elements!
Benjamin Carey
01:28:08
Agree with others' comments on Colombia. I was there for a conference a few years ago and was really impressed by the vision and foresight around the value of heritage tourism as a driver of sustainable development, and how much it drew on local indigenous wisdom.

01:33:20
To add onto Jonathan Tourtellot's point about protecting destinations' uniqueness, protecting the local cultural heritage is also just as important as protecting the local environment. Tourist attractions depend on the protection of these types of resources. If there are any professionals here interested in learning more about how to manage natural and cultural heritage sites collaboratively and using a holistic perspective, I invite you to check out the PUP Global Heritage Consortium: www.pupconsortium.net

very interesting case of Greenland with its somewhat "early-stage" tourism combined with strong democracy. Because it still allows choices of developing other economic sectors / diversifying the economy - which takes away high financial expectations & pressure from the tourism sector

Like Greenland's people oriented focus. In addition to surveys and asking passive questions, it is important to have regular feedback from community/residents and include residents in decision-making. Would like to know which destinations do more than surveys to know resident sentiments? Thanks.

Hi in St Kitts in the Caribbean we started doing REsidents' Perception Survey in 2017. We will be rolling out the 2nd one later this way. At first, we were reluctant because of the pandemic but after stakeholder discussions, it was decided this is actually a good time to do so especially for comparison
Idrissia Thestrup - Visit greenland
01:56:02
@nandini we do more than surveys :-) We have a close collaboration with local DMOs but we also do town readiness programs to inform, hear feedback and mitigate tourism, even more when it comes to cruise tourism, which is the segments with the highest negative rate.

Perception surveys and community / consumer blended surveys/analysis done in concert with ‘town hall concept’ engagements that really capture the one-to-one personal connections and response to the questions and shifts in travel programs, market trends, climate and the issues of socioeconomic barriers to the overall goals.

Sustainability should also address the inequity and inequality in tourism. Covid has affected marginalized communities in the industry. In the US, most tourism/hospitality workers are diverse esp minimum wage workers. What and How can the tourism industry help in making sure we don't create a community of haves and have-nots? The last year showed that the tourism workers bore the brunt in the crisis!

✨ HELP KICKSTART GREENLAND'S TOURISM BY VOTING! ✨Visit Greenland is so excited to be shortlisted for the prestigious Webby awards - the Oscars of the internet - in the Travel & Adventure video category. We’re in good company as Tourism New Zealand and CNN are among the 4 other shortlisted videos. Our video, Future of Travel in Greenland 🇬🇱, was first created for our travel trade show Vestnorden 2020. It shows how resilient Greenlanders have been during the pandemic, but also reveals the good that can come out of hard times - for example, new products that have been tried and tested by the locals. We’re particularly proud of this achievement as we created and launched our local staycation campaign, Nunarput Nuan, and this video, completely in-house at Visit Greenland. It’s a great recognition for our humble team, who work within the world’s smallest national budget for tourism - probably ;) 💪🏼🎉 Please vote for our video so we can win - and thanks for supporting Greenland’s tourism future 🙌🏽
