From my experience--once the school hears of a students death--reach out to parents and ask them how would they like the school to proceed with the communication. The school then will employ DCPS crisis team to come to the school to speak with the students, once the family agrees that we are ok to share about the loss of a student.

My first year I was on crisis call, I got called to a high school for a teacher who had died over winter break. The principal had called for an assembly in the auditorium to make the announcement to the high schoolers. It was in person but in a very large crowd and then broke out into small groups
