A law review article entitled "the Law of Foraging" (https://ir.lawnet.fordham.edu/ulj/vol45/iss4/3/), which I highly recommend, documents how criminal trespass laws originated in the post-Civil War South: to forbid Black people from gathering wild food, which was a common practice in slavery days: to supplement the meager rations the plantations provided. The trespass laws were intended to prevent food self-sufficiency and force Black people back to the plantations, to take poorly-paid jobs as sharecroppers.
