If the kids say Jew school, they say it with ownership and pride. Totally appropriate for them, not for my letterhead.

the term “hebrew school” probably doesn’t come from Hebrew language anyway. It is a 19th century term when Hebrew was a more polite way of saying Jewish, hence Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Hebrew Education Society, etc.

I had figured that, actually!

Hebrew school is just legacy. I use it depending on whom I’m speaking. Or rather let it slide based on the age of the person. We have a name for our program J-JEP but I refer to our religious school which has a Hebrew componant.
