In Los Altos, up to 850sf does not count towards floor area or lot coverage.

Even if you have your lot maxed out, you can always add 800sf per state law (850sf for Los Altos). The question to ask your jurisdiction is if your lot is NOT maxed out, you add 800sf ADU, do you then get to add onto your house in the future and max our your lot (plus the ADU). This varies between jurisdictions. Palo Alto has adopted that 800sf as an “exemption” but Redwood City has not.
