Edward

😬
Renée Cailloux
47:24
@Edward! I’ll go!
Cristal Herrera
47:29
They totally do want structure!
Edward
47:43
Kids crave structure—what my BTSA mentor told me day 1 of teaching
Cristal Herrera
47:51
👌🏽
Liz Matchett
48:23
Roni Habib
Daniel Lorenzo Gonzalez
48:31
Yes, that is how I feel Paul. Many questions in my head
Renée Cailloux
48:43
Roni was amazing
Cristal Herrera
48:46
I received an email earlier this week where the last sentence to me was, “You ARE enough” and it made me cry.
Edward
48:53
Stop comparing yourself to other teachers—so easy to do if you’re on Twitter
Cristal Herrera
49:38
I’ve had those same thoughts, Liz!
Bonnie Liu
50:20
I feel the same ,Liz! Thanks for the sharing.
Cristal Herrera
50:56
Nope!
Edward
51:10
My district preaches biliteracy—but doesn’t walk the talk!!
Iris Villasenor
51:25
I wonder if can have access to your slide presentation ?
Vicky Xiong-Lor
51:33
I am in the same boat, Liz. Thanks for sharing that.
Chung Chou
51:48
Totally agree and world language teachers’ voices often time are being ignored
Liz Matchett
53:00
Yes, we will absolutely share ALL links.
Cristal Herrera
53:18
Vicky! 🤗🤗🤗
Iris Villasenor
53:22
Gracias:)
Vicky Xiong-Lor
54:11
Hi Cristal!!
Cristal Herrera
54:24
Vicky,Sending you hugs!
Vicky Xiong-Lor
54:56
@ Cristal, Sending you a virtual hug as well!!
Cristal Herrera
55:04
Thank you!
Cristal Herrera
55:26
Yes, I love this!
Edward
55:43
Students can sense when the teacher does not have it together!!
Rachael Roach
58:51
If you have students with schedule changes the first few days, it seems to make sense to wait on the syllabus.
Rachael Roach
59:02
This happens at my school all the time.
Edward
59:10
Students will be bombarded with other syllabi
Vicky Xiong-Lor
59:10
I do wait to go over the syllabus too.
Renée Cailloux
59:13
I agree that students are eager to start speaking the language, even beginners.
Barbara Henriquez
59:23
I agree, the syllabus later in the week.
Cristal Herrera
59:30
I agree, Rachael. Otherwise we spend the first three weeks going over the syllabus due to so many schedule changes that take place.
Carolyn Swaney
59:40
YES! That's all the other teachers do so they just GLAZE over. Dead stare.
Rachael Roach
59:46
I also wait a couple of days to go over rules.
Edward
59:55
Especially if you’re on a 4x4, Carolyn :)
Angela Martinez
01:01:44
I love doing the Name tents! I have them go on flipgrid to talk about it. Helps me learn their names quicker too!
Cristal Herrera
01:02:19
OOOH, Angela, I love that extension piece to the Name tent activity!
Rachael Roach
01:02:20
You can also have a tardy log so you know which students arrive late (this can help take more accurate attendance).
Renée Cailloux
01:02:44
Great idea for the names
Cristal Herrera
01:02:46
Thank you for that idea, Rachael.
Rachael Roach
01:03:33
And once you know their preferred names, you want to leave this info for your subs so they use the correct names as well.
nancy
01:03:44
Or you can put their name on a 3x5 card. Then have them complete some information on it. Then you have equity cards to use to call on them at random. It also helps you learn their names.
Laura Farrar
01:04:23
I have an activity for them to complete independently at the beginning of class, that way I can walk around to ask each of them discreetly if I'm pronouncing their name correctly. Many students are hesitant to correct teachers in front of the class.
Liz Matchett
01:05:14
I Have to really work on that!
Liz Matchett
01:05:37
My new mantra.
Carolyn Swaney
01:05:39
I'm going to have them do the name tents FIRST and write in the inside if their name in our system doesn't match the name I'll be using AND the way they pronounce it Care-oh-lin (like tin)
Anne Cappiello (ella/she/la/her)
01:05:46
Only keep what brings you and your students “joy”. : )
Junko Hosoi
01:06:58
👍
Cristal Herrera
01:09:16
I bought my own air purifier for my classroom.
Evelyn Bejarano
01:09:28
I used to let them sit where they wanted. That by the end of the week I knew who I needed to separate the next week.
Edward
01:09:38
@Cristal: our district gave us three per classroom lol
Tonja Byrom
01:09:45
@Evelyn, Same!
Carolyn Swaney
01:09:53
@Evelyn that's EXACTLY what I do!
Edward
01:10:03
I like control so I always assigned seats from day 1 :)
Cristal Herrera
01:10:15
@ Edward: WOW!!! What??? We didn’t even get ONE per school! I’m glad your district was proactive and took care of you!
Cristal Herrera
01:10:49
They told us it was not necessary.
Edward
01:10:57
@Cristal: wowwwwwww
Cristal Herrera
01:11:02
yeah
Tonja Byrom
01:11:32
@Edward hahahahha
Liz Matchett
01:11:46
Whatever they need—I have a self-serve student center
Cristal Herrera
01:12:29
Liz, but if you have the supplies accessible, don’t they just magically disappear?
Liz Matchett
01:12:45
Nope, they don’t.
Edward
01:12:47
And do not give extra credit points for kids to bring in materials — that’s not equitable
Carolyn Swaney
01:12:50
@Liz, me too...but they still ask. Cuties:)
Cristal Herrera
01:13:09
I agree, Edward…not cool at all.
Vicky Xiong-Lor
01:13:47
I have supplies for my students and I also allow my kiddos to come and print their work in my room.
Carolyn Swaney
01:14:50
@Edward, my daughter's teacher offered extra credit for bringing food to a class party and NO it was not culinary arts.
Edward
01:15:02
@Carolyn—so wrong!
Cristal Herrera
01:16:13
Just be careful with the wipes because they are not allowed in some districts. In our district they only want us to use a water bottle with diluted soap, that they provide us, and a microfiber cloth that they replace every day with a clean one.
Anne Cappiello (ella/she/la/her)
01:16:35
I have a couple of smiley faces on my walls to remind me to smile throughout the day. It sounds funny, but sometimes we can forget. ; )
Cristal Herrera
01:16:49
@Anne, true!
Cristal Herrera
01:18:59
Yes, very true, Liz. Students DO love that acknowledgment as they are entering our class rooms.
Vicky Xiong-Lor
01:19:13
Having a "Safe Zone" chart in the class is helpful as well.
Angela Martinez
01:19:40
I loved asking them random questions every day during attendance. Fav. food, animal, tv show, class, etc.
Milosz Hastings Porro
01:20:28
It reminds me of a quote that I heard last year that said,
Milosz Hastings Porro
01:20:32
“Students don
Milosz Hastings Porro
01:20:47
don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care
Angela Martinez
01:21:11
Great quote Milosz!Love it!
Eva Pichlbauer
01:27:36
And better not to face them but be at their side or look in the same direction: less confrontational..
Cristal Herrera
01:29:16
Positive interactions are key to establishing strong teacher-student relationships.
Edward
01:30:26
We have the responsibility to model tech etiquette for students
Rachael Roach
01:30:34
I ask my Ss to put their cell phones in the clear plastic boxes on the tables. They can still see them so they know they’re safe but they can’t use them.
Edward
01:32:01
Guilty
Anne Cappiello (ella/she/la/her)
01:32:16
Sometimes I have to send my students’ phone to the “cell phone motel” to take a siesta. : ). It works.
Liz Matchett
01:32:27
@Anne—love it!
Barbara Henriquez
01:32:58
@Anne, great idea!
Edward
01:33:24
I thought I saw Paul texting...
