I was nervous about not getting abortion care in May 2020 in TX but, I was fortunate enough to get abortion care. However, I had to drive to another city to get abortion care because my local abortion clinic didn't any upcoming appointments.

01:05:01
Thank you Cathy for your work in abortion funds in TX <3

01:05:11
Thank you for sharing that, Andrea! Yes that’s so common to have to travel long distances and that’s part of the reason we are doing this work!

01:06:45
Yes, that one, Cathy— that’s the low key best part. How the ppl come together in joy amidst all the violence!

01:07:41

Noor is a co founder of Cicada Collective, a QTPOC-centered reproductive justice organization that helps reduce the barriers to reproductive care for all by providing abortion access support, doula trainings, trans community networks, and comprehensive sex & gender education in North Texas and beyond. http://www.cicadacollective.org/

Question for the Q&A at the end: If you are not part of the communities that are the most marginalized, how can you work in a way that is meeting ppl with most need but not stepping into a place where you shouldn’t be/perpetuating white saviorism?

01:23:30
shameless plug, Advocates sex ed curriculum is free and covers all that stuff! www.3rs.org

01:24:21
how did you work with costco to get it for so cheap?

01:25:44
lmao

01:27:28
question: is it inappropriate to reach out to other communities as well as your own?

01:27:42
or is it overreach, more often than not?

01:29:11
on the other hand, as a woman of color, would it be inappropriate for me to reach beyond my ethnic group?

01:29:14
one of the things I've found is a little bit easier for working with older members of privileged communities, especially with white people, is getting them to read some of the more publicly accessible books written about racial justice and then following back and asking what they understood and didn't, and trying to get at what their underlying fears are so that they can identify and talk about them to start working on white supremacy in particular. Its a baby step but it helps refocus attention to where it should be (and money to ethical organizations)

01:29:54
Question: what can organizers do to make sure that mutual aid projects are building power in communities and not encouraging reliance on orgs and/or The State?(if that's a goal, I know there are a lot of perspectives on that)

01:29:57
Thank you so much!

01:30:25
perks of being in oregon too i guess!

01:35:52
but what happens when it's time to do taxes

01:36:05
ugh love this sex worker representation on this panel, thank YOU!

01:36:15
Instead of 501c(3), just be a collective community project?

01:38:28
we had to stop because we hadn't realized there were tax implications for moving money from the collection site to send to people via cashapp, cash, zelle etc. and the people who were moving redistributing the $ would have to pay an extra 8k in taxes bc of what we had fundraised

01:39:01
maybe if your org was registered as a business/org?? ^

01:39:30
that's why i'm asking. We didn't register as an org or anything

01:39:53
but we had discussions over seeking 501c3 status so that we wouldn't have to pay taxes

01:40:08
