CCSSO and NSLA should be commended for last year’s creation last April of The Safe Summer Learning Network, seeking to implement a RAND/Wallace study demonstrating educationally meaningful benefits of high-quality summer learning programs. Of course, this is especially important to disadvantaged communities disproportionately affected by educational attainment shortfalls as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the advantages of summer learning is the creation of supplementary teacher/parent-caregiver/student triadic relationships. It provides another opportunity for children to interact with caring adults who are neither parents/caregivers or their regular teachers, and upon whom they can model behaviour. Such multiple models may provide children with, and with a sense of, agency in their behaviour.

Good point on expanded learning opportunities, Melissa. Research demonstrates that arts education improves executive function and analytical capacity, increases empathy, commitment to education and to success, and facilitates greater attainment and feelings of happiness. EOT, summer, and recreational learning opportunities present ideal opportunities for arts education, especially when budgetary and other concerns may have limited those opportunities in school-time. Research has demonstrated that drawing can be highly effective as an aid to learning.

As you know, Brian, EOT and recreational learning opportunities can be effectively delivered by digital media, provided that they are combined with opportunities for interaction with real human beings, particularly in real time. This can supplement summer learning.EOT learning via digital media also reduces barriers to participation for reasons such as time, culture, real or perceived socioeconomic disadvantages. When children interact, without appearing on screen, with their peers and with adults through their mobile devices, they may feel increased agency, freedom, and responsibility.
