Hi, thanks for the welcome! Hey Cindy, did you see the article about the Alaska Senator, Morcouski. That it was easier for her to stand up to Trump because they have tiered voting?

what is an example of laws that lead to whites being disproportionately represented in government positions?
Cindy Black
48:44
@David - I don’t know of any laws that do that.
David Gordon
48:44
(in Yakima)
David Gordon
51:06
does the preclearance bill specifically mention that the local laws do not adversely affect people of color? I'm worried that pre-clearance could be used *against* a more progressive community
Lisa Ayrault
51:27
Our current winner-take-all voting method allows a group that has a bare majority of the votes in a community to win ALL the seats on a city or county council. That’s the situation in Yakima that’s led to NO representation for the Latinx and Native communities, even though they have nearly half the voters.
victor
51:38
what is pre-clearance???
Max Bauman
51:52
What's that in the background?
Mary Lou Johnson
52:15
I just clicked on one link and it said SB6688.
Colin Cole (MED, he/him)
52:25
before a jurisdiction is allowed to make a change to their electoral system, they need to double-check with the Attorney General and/or a court to ensure that the change to their elections will not have a negative impact on the ability of communities of color to elect candidates of their choice
Colin Cole (MED, he/him)
52:35
SB 6688 was the 2019-2020 version, it will have to be reintroduced for 2021!
Colin Cole (MED, he/him)

I would support RCV but I'm skeptical that it would lead to a different result. In the end, the "wonderful" candidate will not win and it will be the lesser of evils who the race will come down to. RCV does make a difference in a parliamentary system, but we don't have that.
Floyd Kershner
01:02:00
Like us?
Michael Martin
01:02:50
Thank you Cindy!
Kamau Chege
01:03:26
I think one of the best cases for RVC is the racial justice one: current system punishes multi candidates of color from running because they can't appeal to the same community AND it rewards racist candidates because there's no penalty for being extremely disliked by a minority of voters
Colin Cole (he/him)
01:03:50
Hi David - we would love to talk to you about this subject later on. Because 30+ jurisdictions now use RCV in the US, there’s a lot of very good research on its efficacy. Would love to share some practical experience with you!
Colin Cole (he/him)
01:04:20
AND… what Kamau just said is incredibly important - in my dayjob, I focus exclusively on the racial justice impacts of electoral reforms liked ranked-choice voting.
