does anyone know if re-entry does not apply if legally adopted? Even if adoption disrupts?

Was the requirement of serving adopted youth at age 16 still in effect, or was that waived as well? Allowing adopted youth can also be served as long as they were in FC at age 14 or older?

Rosemary--ion that youth who were adopted at age 16 or older are Chafee eligible continues. As Chafee eligible youth,those youth could receive Chafee services through age 26 under the new law.

Behind the wheel is about $400 in FL

Many of our driving schools will also do the road test with the youth at the end so they don't have to do it at the DMV

Margaret--The re-entry provisions apply to young people "who left foster care due to age during the COVID-19 public health emergency." So, depending on the situation, it may not be likely that a youth who exited to adoption would be eligible for re-entry under the new law., but there may be some options under your state law. As Rosemary noted, the youth may be eligible for Chafee services, including housing and financial assistance so there may be ways to provide support to that youth if re-entry is not an option.

In Michigan, youth complete Segment I and then have to obtain 50 hours of behind the wheel hours before they are eligible to take segment 2. Does Florida have similar laws? Do you pay for that?

Maine is 70 hours of driving with 10 night driving after 10 hours of driving time in driving schools

We do require 50 hours of practice which can be done with anyone- caregiver, relatives, etc- not something we have to pay for. We do pay for the behind the wheel lessons offered by 3rd party schools.

In Michigan- what does Segment 1 entail? A written test to get the actual permit?

Once youth complete drivers training they become eligible to get their segment 1. The issue we are seeing is our young people do not have people willing to drive with them to obtain their 50 hours.

Who changed and modified that law?

Yes, that tends to be an issue throughout the different states we work with. We have a GAL program that really champions for caregivers to do this with the youth

It is really going to take a lot of advocacy and word of mouth from some caregivers to other caregivers once you start to gain momentum

At what age do these services end?

We also let them know that they MUST complete driver's ed/behind the wheel lessons to benefit from the insurance

These services end at 21

or 6 months after they reach permanency

Do you have certain driving schools that contract with your agency?

We don't have a signed contract with any driving schools. We have working relationships over the years with schools who now will make our youth a priority due to our work with them
