Short Q&A :)

57:45
Question: Definitely, we have to fix the problems in JJ system so that it is focused on education, rather than punishment. But one reason the juvenile got into trouble probably because of their home environment or gang members or peer pressure that pushed them into committing crimes. If we put them back to the same environment that failed them before, wouldn't it be even harder to help them?

01:00:42
Thank you Nadia for that wonderful presentation! Now we have a 10 minute Q&A for her so if anyone has any questions for her, please feel free to put it in the chat and I will say the question aloud!

01:03:56
Maybe not JJ prison. But a school with teachers and psychologists.

With more public attention favoring the reform of police system, do you see if this would bring some positive changes to the juvenile system?

Schools could train their own staff to work with a local program that provides division options rather than having an armed police officer on campus. Too often, in my career, I saw police officers dealing with discipline issues that the school should deal with…. not a police officer.

01:52:35
What about another staff person who goes through similar training as SRO officiers get? What's the pros and cons of having a police officer versus a counselor?

01:54:01
These programs are also very expensive on both organizations! School District money should be spent on additional, well trained counselors, etc., rather then introducing a police presence on campus. Police should only be on campus - called to the school - in an emergency, criminal situation.

01:54:36
We will be ending the Q&A after this question, but we will be sending a recap email with everything that was sent in the chat including links, ppts!
