Sorry if I’m asking a question that has already been answered: does a non-profit agency need to have a licensed health professional on staff to refer people to CHWs in order to bill Medicaid?

no; it is not necessary to have the licensed professional on staff

what is necessary is to ensure that there is a record that a licensed practitioner recommended the person get CHW services

We don't have a specific list of provider types, but basically if the RI Dept of Health licenses the provider type and the person is a healtcare provider, it works

I can confirm that enrollment as a CHW is different from any enrollment that a person may have done to be a provider of the Diabetes Prevention Program. RI Medicaid does not to my knowledge have a provider type specific to the Diabetes Prevention Program.

re family: if each person in question has been recommended for CHW services and is getting their own separate services, you can bill that separately just as if they weren't family members.

if you have one person getting services, they can receive services in the company of their family and have it count as individual services for that one person

coaching a patient during a physician office visit is billable even though the physician is billing for the OV itself

That high of issues you need to have a licensed therapist that may be way out of the scope of a CHW, if you have dx of behavior health you need a licensed practitioner for the safety of the CHWs

How does this work for schools, classroom education re: health topic training? There would be more than 4 students in a classroom. Also, could see CHWs being a great resource for school adjustment counselors, school nurses, etc. re: health education, addressing SDOH?

There should also be a CHW supervisor on site to help manage your CHWS this wouldn't be something managed by a Teacher or Social Worker or Resident Supervisor, they need to have a CHW Supervisor who knows the scope of the CHWs would be my recommendation for all the "out of the box" typical arenas

Along the lines of schools how would this work with non profit orgs who have CHW’s? Those clients see us outside of the reg community meetings

I could see an adjustment counselor benefiting from referring families for CHW services re: SDOH, helping with entitlements.
